비야디(比亚迪)의 다각화 전략 연구: 중국 자동차 산업구조 변화를 중심으로 (A Study on Diversification Strategy of BYD: Focusing on China's Automobile Industry Structure Change)

초록

2차 전지와 휴대폰 부품 제조기업이었던 비야디는 2003년 자동차 산업에 진출한 이후 불과 5년 만에 중국 10대 자동차 기업 중 하나로 급성장하였다. 비야디는 인수합병을 통해서 사업 다각화를 추진하였고 2009년 현재 다각화 전략이 좋은 성과를 거두고 있다. 이에 본고는 비야디 경영현황과 성장 과정의 특징을 정리하였고, 다각화 전략에 초점을 맞추어 세 가지 분석을 시도하였다. 첫째는 비야디 다각화 전략의 유형 분석이고 둘째는 비야디 다각화 전략의 동인(動因) 분석이며, 셋째는 다각화 전략의 유형이 변화되고 있는 원인에 관한 분석이다. 분석 결과 비야디 다각화 전략은 자동차 사업 진출 초기에 외형상 국내 非관련 다각화였으나 시간이 지날수록 관련 다각화에 적합한 조직 운영의 성격을 보이고 있다. 또한 포터의 다섯 가지 경쟁요인 분석 모델을 활용하여 다각화 전략의 동인을 분석하였는데 중국과 세계 자동차 산업 구조는 비야디와 같은 대체에너지 관련 기업들에게 유리한 사업 기회를 제공하는 방향으로 바뀌고 있다. 결국 비야디는 외부 경영환경의 변화와 중국 정부의 정책 변화를 잘 활용하여 자동차 부문과 IT 부문을 관련 다각화로 엮어가면서 조직 내 운영의 효율성 및 수직적 통합 효과를 높였다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

BYD, a Chinese firm, is the second largest rechargeable battery manufacturer in the world. It entered the automobile manufacturing business through mergers and acquisitions in 2003. In 2009 BYD became one China’s ten biggest automobile manufacturers. This paper summarizes the development process and business characteristics of BYD, and attempts three different analyses of its diversification strategy. The first analysis looks at the diversification type of BYD, the second the motive for diversification, and the third the cause for diversification type change. According to the results of these three analyses, the diversification type of BYD can be classified into a domestic unrelated one but its attribute becomes closer and closer to the related diversification as time goes on. A major driver for such a type change comes from the global automobile industry structure change which emphasizes fuel efficiency, low carbon gas emission, being environment friendly and the use of alternative energy.
In addition, such a structure change is taking place not only in the international market but also in the domestic market. This paper uses Porter's five forces model to explain the automobile industry structure change. After the 2008 financial crisis in the United States, the global automobile industry structure has rapidly changed from being manufacturer centric to being consumer centric. Further, new energy developers or the environment friendly parts developers were able to enter the industry, and their bargaining power is increasing. At the same time, the conventional strategy of the big three firms in the United States automobile industry ―mass production and mass sale―has changed into a strategy of diversified production and customized sale, and the sales volume for electric car or hybrid car has continuously increased. China's automobile industry has gone under a similar change as the global automobile industry changed, and BYD took advantage of such a change as a good business opportunity. Currently, BYD is performing well through vertical integration and operational synergy between its IT division and its automobile division. So one can argue that the hybrid cars or electric cars launched by BYD will play an important role in improving its diversification effect in the future.
