조명희 시집 『봄잔듸밧위에』 연구- 폴 베를렌의 「가을의 노래」 수용과 글로컬 텍스트를 중심으로 - (The Study on Jo Myeong-hui’s 『On the Spring Grass』)

초록

본고는 프랑스 상징주의 시인인 폴 베를렌의 「가을의 노래」가 김억과 김영랑 등 한국 근대 시인과 그들의 시작품들에 미친 영향을 살펴볼 것이며, 기존 연구에서 다루어지지 않았던 조명희의 시세계 속에 폴 베를렌의 ‘시창작론’ 및 「가을의 노래」를 창조적으로 전유한 시론 및 시작품이 있음을 비교문학적으로 살펴보려고 한다. 즉, 한국 근대시의 형성 과정에서 서구 유럽 문학과의 영향과 수용, 전유와 재창조의 시적 재현을 조명희 시와 시론 논의를 통해 재인식하고자 했다.
랭보와 함께 폴 베를렌은 프랑스 상징주의 시인 가운데서 우리나라에 가장 많이 소개된 시인이며, 비교문학 연구의 대상이 되어왔다. 특히 「가을의 노래」의 경우는 그 번역 횟수가 가장 많았다. 한국 근대시에 있어서 폴 베를렌 시의 수용은 단순한 모방에 그친 것이 아니라 한국 근대시의 패러다임을 구축하는 과정으로 볼 수 있다.
조명희가 직접 쓴 『봄잔듸밧위에』의 「「머리말」」 속에서 한 명의 시인이 가져야 할 ‘예술론’뿐만 아니라, 시론 그리고 민족문학론을 밝히고 있다. 이러한 시론은 폴 베를렌과 타고르의 시와 시론으로부터 깊은 영향을 받은 것이다. 시집 『봄잔듸밧위에』에서 「떨어지는 가을」, 「고독의 가을」과 같이 가을의 정취를 노래하고, 외로운 시적자아의 서정을 드러내는 작품들에서 폴 베를렌의 「가을의 노래」가 표현하는 정취를 많이 발견할 수 있다. 이후의 시에서 조명희는 폴 베를렌 시의 인상주의적 특징이라고 할 수 있는 “순간적인 느낌의 즉각적인 포착”을 시적 형상화의 중요한 방법으로 가져오고, “진동하는 예민한 감각과 고통스러울 정도로 섬세한 정신을 소유한 시적 자아”를 자신의 시에서 주요한 시적 자아로 전면화한다.
조명희의 『봄잔듸밧위에』는 폴 베를렌의 문학적 경향만을 수용한 것이 아니라, 전통적인 한자문화권의 언어 양상과 타고르의 『기탄자리』에서 볼 수 있는 종교적 숭고미 등을 수용하고 전유하고 있다. 식민지를 경험하는 제3세계 국가의 시인에게서 발견할 수 있는 전지구적인 문학담론의 혼종성은 잡종적이고 고유한 정체성을 가지지 못한 것으로 폄하될 것이 아니라, 20세기 초 한국 근대문학 형성기의 역동적이고 상호소통적인 문학담론의 교섭과 창조적 과정으로 평가되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This study investigates the influence of “Chanson d'automne” by Paul-Marie Verlaine, a French symbolist poet, on modern Korean poets such as Kim Uk and Kim Yeong-rang and their poetry. Further, the thesis deals with Paul Verlaine’s theory of writing poetry found in Jo Myeong-hui’s poetry, which has not been studied enough, and his poetics as well as poems that creatively utilizing “Chanson d'automne” with the perspective of comparative literature. That is, this study suggests a new understanding of not only the impacts and acceptance of European literature during the formative period of modern Korean poetry but also the poetic representation of internalization and reinvention, with discussing Jo Myeong-hui’s poetry and poetics.
Along with Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine is one of the most famous French symbolist poets who were introduced in Korea, and he has been steadily studied in the comparative literature. Plus, “Chanson d'automne” has been translated in various versions in Korea. As for modern Korean poetry, the acceptance of Paul Verlaine’s poetry does not mean a simple imitation, but a stepping stone to establish the paradigm of modern Korean poetry.
In “Preface” included in 『On the Spring Grass』, Jo Myeong-hui wrote about his poetics and the theory of national literature as well as “the art theory” which a poet should possess. His poetics was deeply influenced by the poetry and poetics of Paul Verlaine and Rabindranath Tagore. Jo Myeong-hui depicted the atmosphere of the autumn in “A Falling Autumn” and “The Autumn of Solitude,” while the moods expressed in Paul Verlaine’s “Chanson d'automne” can be identified in Jo Myeong-hui’s poems describing the emotions of the lonely poetic self. In his later works, Jo Myeong-hui used “an instant capture of momentary feelings,” an impressionistic characteristic of Paul Verlaine, as the important way of making poetic imageries, and he brought “the poetic self who has keen senses and achingly sensitive spirits” to the fore as the primary poetic self in his poetry.
『On the Spring Grass』 not just accepted Paul Verlaine’s literary tendency, but also accepted and internalized the discourse of the cultural area of chinese character and the religious sublime found in “Gitanjali” by Rabindranath Tagore. The hybridity of global literary discourse that can be found in the works of a poet who experienced the colonialism in the third world should not be dismissed as something heterogenous and without unique identity. Rather, it should be appreciated as the dynamic interaction of different literary discourses and the creative process in the formative period of modern Korean literature in the early twentieth century.
