구조분석을 통해 본 잠언의 주제들 (A Study on the Literary Reading of Proverbs for Their Sermons)

초록

기존의 잠언 경구의 전통적 해석은 잠언들이 아무렇게나 배열되어 있고, 그것들이 단락이라는 문맥을 가진다는 것을 부인하는 것이었다. 하지만 오늘날 잠언 연구는 잠언의 경구들이 일관된 구조를 가진 단락을 형성하고 있다는 인식 속에서 잠언의 경구들을 문맥적으로 읽으려는 시도가 점점 탄력을 받고 있다. 본 연구는 이런 전제 속에서 잠언 경구들이 전체적 시각에서 어떻게 단락들을 형성하고 있는지를 제시했다. 그래서 단락 구분을 거시적인 차원과 미시적 차원에서 보여주었고, 단락 안에서뿐만 아니라 단락들 간의 구조를 고찰하고, 단락들이 제시하는 주제들이 무엇인지를 연구했다.
이를 위해 본 연구는 먼저 잠언의 경구의 문맥적 읽기에 힘을 실어 주는 기존 연구들을 검토하여, 거기서 단락 설정의 기준들을 도출하였다. 이어서 잠언 전체가 다음과 같이 동심원 구조를 이룬다는 것을 보여주었다: A(1-9장), B(10:1-22:16), C(22:17-24:34), B'(25-29장), A'(30-31장). 이 각각의 대단락들은 나름대로 주제들을 가지고 있는데, 여기서 각각의 대단락의 핵심 주제는 신중함이다.
특별히 10:1-22:16에서 전반부(10-15장)의 주제들은, 인애와 공의와 의로 특징짓는 공동체를 세우라는 것(11-12장), 이를 위해서 훈계로 이기적인 욕구를 제어하라는 것(13장), 신중함을 가지고 공동체를 세우라는 것(14장), 그리고 신중한 자가 복으로 마음의 즐거움을 누린다는 것(15장)인데, 이 주제들은 후반부(17:1-22:16)에서 다시 반복된다. 대단락인 10:1-22:16의 중심을 이루는 16장은 여호와를 인도함을 받으며 신중하게 행동할 것을 강조하여 신중함이라는 주제를 부각시키고 있다. 그래서 진정으로 공동체를 인애와 공의와 의로 세우기 위해서는 신중하게 행동하여 속임을 당하지 않고 하나님의 뜻대로 인애와 공의와 의를 실행해야 한다는 것을 교훈하고 있다. 이처럼 신중함의 주제는 계속해서 22:17-24:34와 25-29장에 핵심적 주제로 제시된다.
이와 같은 잠언 경구의 문맥적 읽기는 확실히 잠언 설교자에게 단락의 문맥에서 경구를 읽도록 유도하고, 경구의 의미를 더 넓은 단락의 핵심 주제와 연결시키도록 도와 설교 메시지를 더욱 풍성하게 해 줄 것이다.

영어초록

The traditional interpretation of proverbial sayings has been made on the notion that they are arranged in a random way, so that it is impossible to find out any units in which they are framed into a meaningful pattern. However, this study has attempted an exploration of units of proverbial sayings on the assumption that they were collected into coherent wholes with their own structures and then, that the units also display a meaningful structure with one another both on the macro level and on the micro level. For this, our first attention has been drawn to the review of the literature which has lent support for the case that the sayings in the book of Proverbs were located to form a unit with their adjacent sayings.
Then, this study has analysed the structure of the book of Proverbs, with the result that the book of Proverbs can be demarcated into the following concentric structure: A(chapters 1-9), B(10:1-22:16), C(22:17-24:34), B'(chapters 25-29), and A'(chapters 30-31). Each of these collections contains its unique theme(s) in such a way that those themes are combined to show a thematic development. More specifically, the collection A puts its emphasis on the significance of wisdom as building up a community on the basis of love, justice and righteousness (Prov. 1:3), and goes on to put into a remarkable relief prudence as a practical virtue that contributes to the community.
What is noteworthy is that the theme of prudence occurs in the subsequent collections. Especially, the theme of prudence is well presented with other themes in the collection B. The collection B forms a concentric structure in which the units display the following themes: the life characterized by love, justice and righteousness, mortification of desires by instruction, prudence, and the happiness of the mind. The sequence of these themes entails that the life of character requires the mortification of selfish desires and the pursuit of prudence on the part of humans in edifying the community according to the will of Yahweh. This point is also evident when we have studied the themes of the collections C and B' through structural analysis.
The above observations lend more credence to the attempt of reading proverbial sayings in their contexts, namely in a unit to which they belong and in relation to their larger units. This kind of literary reading is sure to be a great tool with which the preachers of proverbs can bring out rich messages from the book of Proverbs.
