초록

이 논문에서는 서구 세계를 기행하고 그것을 한시로 담아낸 김득련(金得鍊, 1852~1930)의 『환구음초(環璆唫艸)』와 박영철(朴榮喆,1879~1939)의 『구주음초(歐 洲吟草)』를 중심으로,서구 근대의 문명을 대면하는 그들의 서술 시각에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다.김득련은 1896년 러시아 황제 니콜라이 2세 대관식의 축하사절로 파견되어 7개월에 걸쳐서 미국과 유럽을 거쳐 러시아 사행을 마치고 돌아왔다.이때 지은한시를 엮어 『환구음초(環璆唫艸)』를 발간하였다.박영철은 1928년 7월 28일 네덜란드에서 개최되는 국제올림픽을 참관하고 유럽 대도시 방문을 목적으로 한 시찰단모집에 참여하였다.1928년 6월 28일부터 9월 26일까지 3개월간의 이국 체험을 마치고 귀국하여 한시집 『구주음초(歐洲吟草)』를 발표하였다.
19세기말과 20세기 초의 각기 다른 시기에 놓여있던 두 사람은,서구 세계의 ‘같은’ 공간을 체험하며 그곳에서의 견문과 감회를 한시라는 전통적 문예양식을 활용해담아두었다.이들의 한시 작품을 이국 체험의 노정에 따라 비교 분석해 보면,같고 다른 시선을 확인할 수 있다.김득련과 박영철의 한시에는 낯선 이국의 경관과 풍물에대한 견문과 함께 과거의 경험 혹은 고향 등의 또다른 공간을 대입하여 자신들의 감회를 표현하고 있다는 공통점을 찾아볼 수 있다.그러나 서구의 문명을 대하는 시선에는 사뭇 다른 특징을 보이는데,김득련은 새로운 문명에 대한 사실적 묘사와 더불어 그것에 대한 놀라움,부러움,경이감 등을 보인다.박영철은 번화한 문명을 묘사하기 보다는 그곳의 역사적 사건이나 현재의 상황에 대한 평가에 중점을 두고 있다.
김득련과 박영철의 이러한 서술 시각의 차이는 이들의 이국 체험의 목적과도 관련지어 설명할 수 있다.김득련의 경우 공식적인 업무 수행을 위한 사절단으로 파견되었던 만큼 자신의 기록에 신중할 수밖에 없었고,그렇기 때문에 자신의 주관적인 평가를 내리기 보다는 견문에 대한 묘사와 문명 세계에 대한 경이로움을 위주로 표현하였다.박영철은 국제올림픽을 응원하고 유럽 각국 방문을 위한 시찰단으로 여행길에올랐다.그러나 시찰단 참여에는 보고서 제출과 강연회 활동이 암묵적인 의무로 작용했던 바,그의 기록물에 있어서도 이러한 목적이 잘 드러난다.그의 귀국길 인터뷰에서 확인했던 것과 같이 서구 문명에 자신의 친일적 성향을 반영하였으며,이러한 자신의 인식을 조선 민중에 전파시키고자 하는 의도를 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study attempts to explore the narrative perspectives of two people facing Western modern civilization who traveled the Western world and put their experience into classical Chinese poems focusing on Kim Deuk-ryeon’s (金得鍊, 1852~1930) collection of travel notes in classical Chinese poems, “HwanGuEumCho(環 璆唫艸)” and Park Yeong-cheol’s (朴榮喆, 1879~1939) collection of travel notes in classical Chinese poems, “GuJuEumCho (歐洲吟草)”. Kim Deuk-ryeon was dispatched as a congratulatory ambassador for the coronation of Russian Emperor Nikolai II in 1896, and returned after seven months to Russia through America and Europe. was published by woven he complied classical Chinese poems written at this time into “HwanGuEumCho (環璆唫艸)” in publication. Park Yeong-cheol attended the International Olympics held in the Netherlands on July 28, 1928, and participated in recruiting an observation party for the purpose of visiting large cities in Europe. From June 28th to September 26th, 1928, after three months of foreign experience, he returned to Korea and released the collection of classical Chinese poems, “GuJuEumCho (歐洲吟草)”.
The two people, who were at different times in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, experienced the “same” space of the Western world, and they used the traditional literary style of classical Chinese poetry to capture their knowledge and impressions there. When we compare and analyze their works of classical Chinese poetry according to the course of foreign experience, we can see the same and different perspectives. In classical Chinese poems written by Kim Deuk-ryeon and Park Yeong-cheol, it is possible to find a common point that they express their feelings of impressions by substituting another space such as past experiences or hometowns along with knowledge of unfamiliar exotic landscapes and traditions. However, their gaze toward Western civilization shows quite different characteristics, and this shows Kim Deuk-ryeon’s realistic description of a new civilization, as well as a sense of surprise, envy, and awe. Park Yeong-cheol focuses on evaluating the current situation and historical events there rather than portraying a thriving civilization.
The difference between Kim Deuk-ryeon’s and Park Yeong-cheol’s narrative perspectives can be explained in relation to the purpose of their foreign experience.
In the case of Kim Deuk-ryeon, he had to be cautious about his records as he was dispatched as a delegation to perform official duties, and so therefore, rather than making a subjective evaluation of himself, he mainly expressed the description of knowledge and the wonder of the civilized world. Park Yeong-cheol supported the International Olympics and traveled as an observation party for European countries. However, in his participation in the observation party, submission of reports and activities of lectures served as implicit obligations, and this purpose is well evident in his records. As confirmed in the interview on his return trip, he reflected his pro-Japanese tendencies in Western civilization, upon which It was possible to confirm his intention to spread his perception to the Korean public.
