청각장애자녀를 둔 다문화가정 어머니의 양육경험 (A study on multicultural mothers’ experiences of parenting a deaf and hard of hearing)

초록

본 연구는 다문화가정 어머니의 청각장애자녀 양육경험과 청각장애자녀 양육에서 경험하는 어려움을 극복하고 나아가는 과정을 심층면담을 통해 연구 참여자의 경험을 수집하고 분석하는 방법을 사용하여 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상자는 세 명의 청각장애자녀를 둔 다문화가정 어머니였으며, 다음과 같은 연구 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 다문화가정 어머니들은 자녀에게 청각장애가 있다는 사실을 우연한 계기를 통해 발견하고 충격에 빠지지만 점차 자녀의 장애를 수용하고, 조기중재를 시작하였다. 한국에서의 청각장애아들을 위한 정보접근에 어려움을 겪거나 지역별 예산의 차이로 서비스 혜택의 수혜를 받지 못하는 경우도 있으며, 언어치료실의 거부도 경험하였지만, 남편과 시댁식구들의 지원과 지지로 청각장애자녀들의 돌봄에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 어려운 상황 속에서도 좌절하지 않고 자녀의 청각장애를 통해 오히려 ‘장애’에 대한 새로운 인식을 형성하였으며, 자신의 언어장벽을 극복하고 자녀의 성장을 위해 끊임없이 노력하고 있었다. 본 연구는 청각장애자녀를 양육하는 다문화가정 어머니의 양육경험을 통해 그들의 독특한 경험과 어려움을 이해하고 시사점을 찾아 기초자료로 활용할 수 있는 기반을 제공하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영어초록

The object of this research is to study the parenting experience of mothers in multicultural family, and to examine their experience from parenting their hearing impaired children and their efforts to overcome the difficulties from parenting. For the research purpose in-depth interview was conducted with 3 mothers with children with hearing impairment. The number of participants were limited and the age of participants' children was younger than elementary school age. Hence, possible parenting difficulties arising from hearing impaired child in elementary school could not be observed, but the result of this research are as follows.
First, the mother in multicultural family is usually shocked when she accidently found a hearing impairment of her child, but soon she accepted the impairment and started an early intervention. However, she experienced difficult times due to lack of Korean skill and information and social prejudice against multicultural family and hearing impaired people. The support of her husband and family-in-law positively influence on the adaptation of the mother in multicultural family to Korean society, and the mother in multicultural family is overcoming her difficulties by the support of people around her.
Second, the mothers overcome difficulties by forming new understanding on physical disability through their children's hearing impairment. The mothers continuously put great endeavor to upbring their children and overcome language barrier.
This study provides basis for understanding particular experience and difficulties of parenting hearing impaired children in a multicultural family and deduce implication that could be used as baseline data.
