한국 무신도·점복화의 동아시아적 공감과 독자성 (Uniqueness and the Shared Value of Korean Paintings of Shamanic Deities and Divination in the Context of East Asia)

초록

한국 무속의 신적 표상인 무신도는 동아시아의 신앙체계와 소통하면서 스스로의 독자성을 구현하였다. 한국 무속은 유불도 종교 이전 연원이 깊은 우리의 신앙체계이다. 따라서 무속의 제의과정에서 신의 얼굴을 보고 그를 불러내어 같은 기를 감응하는 무신도의 연원 또한 오래다. 그 상징적 역사는 청동기 시대로 거슬러 올라간다. 그럼에도 불구하고 한국 무신도의 위상은 근대이행기 민화의 아류로 취급되고 있다.
오늘날 굿판의 현장에서 무신도가 풍성한 곳은 황해도 굿을 중심으로 한 서울과 경기 이북지역이다. 이 지역이 무신도의 영험을 필요로 하는 강신무들의 분포지역이기 때문이다. 무신도는 계속 축적되지 않고 사제자 당대에서 활용하고 소각된다. 따라서 오랜 역사에 비해 남겨진 그림이 많지 않아 종교화로서 정당한 평가를 받지 못하였다.
근대이행기 동아시아 서화書畫의 소통은 직간접적으로 각기 나라의 그림문화에 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 소설·희곡작품에 들어간 그림삽화는 한·중·일·베트남 4국 신앙화의 폭을 확장시켰다. 이 글에서는 이러한 변화의 과정을 돌아보고 한국 무신도에 나타난 동아시아적 공감과 독자성을 조명하였다.
또한 현전하는 당사주唐四柱책 등 점복·주술과 밀접한 그림들을 묶어 점복화占卜畵라는 갈래개념을 새롭게 제시하였다. 점복화는 인간이 해석하는 하늘의 뜻이라는 점에서 신령의 세계에 접하고 있는 무신도와 그 맥락을 같이 한다. 무신도와 점복화가 근대이행기 민화의 산물이라는 한국 회화사繪畵史의 무심함과는 반대로 오히려 민화의 토양이 된 흔적들을 무신도와 점복화의 실상을 통해 확인하였다.

영어초록

Musindo (paintings of shamanic deities), as a symbolic representation of the sacred world and divination, has established unique features while retaining close connections with the belief systems of East Asia. In the beginning, the shaman culture consisted of indigenous elements of Korean culture before the arrival of such religious philosophies as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The practice of shaman rituals, in which a shaman invokes, observes, and communicates with the spirits, often included paintings of traditional shamanic deities. However, such images are currently treated as an inferior form of folk art amidst the threatening din of modernization.
Shaman rituals are still popular and abundant, particularly in the regions centering on Hwanghae province, including Seoul and the northern province of Kyŏnggi. These regions are widely recognized for the popularity of kangsinmu (possessed shaman), who are designated by the spirits to enter the calling, as opposed to hereditary shaman. The artistic images of deities used in shaman rituals are considered important but are usually burned after the rituals, which poses a challenge to the preservation of shaman paintings and their recommendation as a form of religious art.
As art transitions through time, the traditional art and paintings of East Asian countries have come to vigorously interact with those of the modern world. The images and illustrations embedded in both fictional and dramatic literary works reveal a degree of reflection and cultural interaction among Korea, China, Japan, and Vietnam. The communicative channels and changing dynamics among these cultures are the main subject of this article, which aims to characterize Korean shaman paintings in terms of a common ground of East Asian traditions and to explore their uniqueness in Korea. In this article, the four pillar books inherited from Tang China will also be illuminated in relation to the birth of a new genre, chŏmbokhwa (divination paintings), which plays a significant role in conveying messages from heaven and allowing humans to interpret them. The study of paintings of shamanic deities and divination, previously considered a sub-genre of folk painting in Korean art history, therefore shows that these works are not byproducts of early modern art, but influential folk paintings.
