전북 동부지역 가야 고분의 위세품과 그 위상 (Items that reflect the authority and power of the buried deceased, excavated from Gaya old tombs in the Jeolla Bukdo province)

초록

이 글은 장수, 남원, 진안, 임실 등 전라북도 동부지역에 분포하는 가야고분에서 출토된 위세품을 대상으로 전북동부지역 가야의 위상과 그 성격을 밝히고자 하였다.
전북 동부지역 가야의 대표적인 위세품으로는 통형기대 등의 토기, 금귀걸이 등의 금공품, 무기 및 무구, 마구, 철제모형농공구, 외래계 문물 등을 들 수 있다. 위세품의 형태와 제작 기술이 대가야권역의 중심지인 고령 대가야고분에서 출토된 것과 공통성을 보이고 있다. 그러나 이 지역의 고배, 기대 등 토기문화 중에는 대가야토기를 모방한 것도 있으며, 소가야양식의 특징을 보이는 것도 존재하여 시기에 따라 정치적 이해관계를 달리 하였음을 알 수 있다.
이 지역의 정치체는 독자적 문화를 기반으로 가야문화를 수용하였으며, 기문(국)으로 불리웠다. 장수지역의 가야를 상기문, 운봉고원의 가야를 하기문으로 지칭하였으며, 중기문은 남원 서부 및 임실지역으로 비정할 수 있다. 기문은 대가야권역에 속하는 정치체였으나, 지역국가명인 ‘기문’을 사용할 정도로 자율성을 가지고 있었다. 대가야는고령의 반파국과 전북 동부지역의 기문국 등을 중심으로 형성된 정치체였다. 이 지역과 대가야를 하나로 묶는 요소는 대가야권 내 소국 한기(旱岐)가 공유한 철제모형농공구와 통형기대 등을 통해 알 수 있다. 대가야 왕은 권역 내소국 한기층과 함께 농경 및 매장의례를 통해 대가야의 통합을 유지하고자 하였다 .
대가야권역에서 전북 동부지역의 가야가 차지하는 위상은 대외교역창구로서의 지위이다. 이 지역의 고분에서는남조와 관련된 천계호, 쇠자루솥 등이 확인되었으며, 백제와의 교류를 보여주는 금동신발 등이 출토되었다. 대가야왕이 기문국에게 요구하였던 역할은 대외교류창구였던 것이다.

영어초록

Examined in this article are the so-called ‘authoritative items’ excavated from Gaya tombs in the eastern part of the Jeolla Buk-do(全羅北道) province (especially in areas like Jangsu, Namweon, Jinan, Imshil, etc.), that reflect the authority and power of the deceased individuals buried in those tombs. The intention of this author is to determine the status and nature of the Gaya society or culture in general that must have prevailed throughout the Jeon-Buk(全北) region.
The most representative relic of this sort found from the Jeon-Buk region’s Gaya tombs are earthenware glasses(“Tong’hyeong-gidae”) or golden accessories (like earrings), as well as weapons, armors, harnesses, iron-based copies of agricultural utensils, and other items which seem foreign in origin. The overall forms and techniques apparently used in creating them seem to share similar facets that are also displayed in those found from the Dae-Gaya tombs of the Go’ryeong area, which also happened to be the heart of the Dae-Gaya territory. And while some of the earthenware found here such as Gobae and Gidae were seemingly modeled after their counterparts in Dae-Gaya, there are relics that feature characteristics of the So-Gaya ones as well, so we can see various political interests indeed dictated transmission of culture to take various directions.
The political entity in this region, while nurturing their own unique culture, embraced Gaya culture as well. This entity was called as Gimun(Gimun states), which was originally part of the Dae-Gaya realm but maintained autonomous control of itself enough to assume its own local title ‘Gimun.’ The king of Dae-Gaya, which was based upon the Banpa-guk state of Goryeong and the Gimun-guk state of Jeon-Buk, tried to maintain inner unity of Dae-Gaya by allying itself with one of the small states that existed inside Dae-Gaya, named Han’gi’cheung, through 전북 동부지역 가야 고분의 위세품과 그 위상 · 45 agricultural and burial rituals.
Throughout the Dae-Gaya realm, Gaya in the Jeon-Buk region seems to have served as a portal through which the inside and outside could exchange things and information. From the tombs in this region, foreign items such as Cheon’gye-ho and iron caldron(Jaru-sot) which were well related to the Southern(“Namjo”) dynasties were found, and golden/bronze shoes that display traces of the Gaya people’s exchanges with Baekje were also unearthed. It seems like the role the king of Dae-Gaya asked Gimun-guk to serve was to be a channel for foreign exchanges.
