조선조 문인의 지리산 청학동 유람과 공간 인식 (A Study on Excursions to Cheonghakdong of Mt. Jiri and Its Spatial Understanding among the Literary Figures of Joseon)

초록

본고는 지리산유람록을 통해 ‘지리산 청학동’에 투영된 조선조 문인의 공간 인식을살펴보았다. 본고에서의 지리산 청학동은 경상남도 하동군 쌍계사 뒤쪽 불일폭포 일대를 일컫는다. 조선시대 지리산 유람은 최고봉인 천왕봉과 청학동을 중심으로 이루어졌고, 유람자의 대부분이 남명학파 문인이었다. 이는 조선시대 수백 년 간 청학동에투영된 공간 인식은 결국 남명학파 문인의 청학동에 대한 공간 이해라는 의미이기도하다.
지리산 청학동에 대한 인식은 고려시대 李仁老를 비롯해 앞 시대 선현이 청학동으로 인식했던 공간 의미를 반복해서 확인하는 과정으로 나타났다. 특히 임진란 이후이곳으로 발길이 잦았고, 이는 조선후기까지 지속적으로 나타났다. 대개 청학동 공간보다는 청학동의 신선으로 전해지는 崔致遠에 대한 관심이 유람자를 이곳으로 이끌었다. 조선조 문인들은 최치원에 투영된 神仙的 이미지를 통해 잠시나마 이곳에서 현실의 고뇌에서 벗어나고자 하였다.
그중 조선시대 실천적 지식인이었던 曺植이 이곳으로 유람하여 보여준 공간 인식은독특하였다. 초월의 공간 청학동에서 도리어 현실적 지식인의 自意識을 끊임없이 되새기는 행위는 이 공간에 대한 새로운 의미를 부여하게 되었다. 사실 동일한 장소를찾아 왔음에도 이상향이 아닌 그 속에서 현실적 자의식을 강조한 남명의 공간 인식은 지극히 개인적인 성향이었다. 그러나 이후 남명학파 후학에 이르러서는 남명의 이러한 인식으로 인해 청학동에 새로운 공간 이해가 형성되었다. 특히 급변기인 19-20 세기 남명학파 문인들은 위기의 시대에 지역의 師表인 남명을 갈구하게 되었고, 그의정신과 가르침을 扶持하고 계승하려는 활동을 전개하였다. 이 과정에서 수백 년 간남명의 가르침이 전승되어 온 청학동도 부상하게 되었다. 결국 지리산 청학동은 이들에 의해 최치원의 공간에 조식의 공간적 의미가 더해지게 되었던 것이다.

영어초록

This study set out to investigate literary figures’ space perceptions in Joseon as they were reflected in “Cheonghakdong of Mt. Jiri” by looking into the excursion records of the mountain. In the present study, Cheonghakdong of Mt.
Jiri refers to the area around Bul-il Falls behind the Ssanggye Buddhist Temple in Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam Province. In Joseon, excursions to Mt. Jiri mainly targeted its highest peak Cheonwangbong and Cheonghakdong with more than 80% of visitors being the literary figures in the line of Nammyeong School. In other words, the space perceptions that had been reflected in Cheonghakdong for hundreds of years represent the spatial understanding of literary figures in the line of Nammyeong School for Cheonghakdong.
Cheonghakdong of Mt. Jiri was manifested in a process of checking the spatial meanings of Cheonghakdong repeatedly among the previous sages including Lee In-ro. Visits to the place had never stopped since Imjinwaeran and continued into the latter half of Joseon. In most cases, it was the interest in Cheonghakdong of Choi Chi-won, who was called the Taoist Hermit of Cheonghakdong, that attracted visitors to the place rather than the space itself.
The literary figures of Joseon wanted to escape from the agony of reality even for a while through the Taoist hermit image reflected in Choi.
Of those literature figures, Jo Shik, one of practical intellectuals in Joseon, showed his unique space perceptions after his excursion to the place. He 145 조선조 문인의 지리산 청학동 유람과 공간 인식constantly ruminated over the sense of identity of realistic intellectuals at Cheonghakdong, a transcendent space, thus granting new meanings to the space. Even though he visited the same place as other literary figures, he put an emphasis on the realistic sense of identity in the space that was not his Utopia, which reflects his personal tendency for spatial perceptions. His perceptions led to the formation of new spatial understanding of Cheonghakdong among the later generations of Nammyeong School. In the turbulent times of 19th and 20th century, in particular, the Gangwoo scholars in the line of Nammyeong School longed for Nammyeong Jo Shik, who was the guiding star in the region in a crisis, and tried to preserve and restore his spirit and teaching. In that process, Cheonghakdong, which had inherited his teaching for hundreds of years, made a meteoric rise. In the end, Cheonghakdong of Mt. Jiri was turned from the space of Choi Chi-won to that of Nammyeong Jo Shik through them.
