혁신학교 학부모 동아리 참여 의의와 제약 (Implications and Constraints in Parent Club Participation in Innovation Schools)

초록

본 연구는 교육주체로서 학부모의 지위와 역할을 재조명하기 위해 학부모 동아리 참여 경험의 의미를 분석하였다. 경기도 부천시 소재 혁신초등학교 세 곳에서 학부모 동아리 활동에 참여하고 있는 학부모 7명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였다. 학부모 동아리 참여 경험의 의미는 두 개의 상위범주로 분석하였다. 첫째, 학부모 동아리 참여의 긍정적 의의는 교육주체로 거듭나기 과정으로 확인되었다. 학부모들은 교사와의 관계에서 후원자와 동반자로서 파트너십을 형성하였고 학생들의 개별적 특성과 관계를 잘 이해할 수 있었으며 학교공동체 구성원으로서 소속감과 유대감이 강화되었다. 또한 학부모들은 아이들과 함께 교육활동에 참여함으로써 성취감과 보람을 느끼고 동아리 활동을 자기계발의 기회로 삼아 제2의 삶을 설계하였다. 학부모들은 맹목적 학력주의와 내 자녀 중심의 교육관을 성찰하였고 자녀들에게 솔선수범하는 모습을 보임으로써 모델이 되었다. 둘째, 학부모 동아리 참여와 발전을 저해하는 현실적 제약 요인들이 발견되었다. 학교 제도적 차원에서 혁신교사의 전근, 학교 예산의 감소 그리고 학교활동 참여에 대한 과도한 요구는 학부모 동아리의 자생적 발전을 위협하는 것으로 나타났다. 학부모 주체적 차원에서 맞벌이 증가에 따른 학부모 참여율 감소는 소수 학부모들의 소진을 초래하였다. ‘활동가학부모’와 ‘일반학부모’의 참여 수준과 역량의 차이 때문에 학부모들 간에 괴리감과 단절이 심화되고 학부모들의 다양한 처지와 입장이 배려되지 않는 상황에서 동아리의 폐쇄적 파벌화 문제도 우려되었다. 또한 비참여/비협조적인 학부모들이 학교참여 행태를 ‘치맛바람’으로 바라보는 왜곡된 시선과 자기 자녀 중심의 틀에 갇힌 부모들의 소극적 참여가 문제로 지적되었다. 이상의 연구결과를 바탕으로 교육주체로 거듭나는 학부모의 위상과 역할을 논의하고 학부모 학교참여 활성화를 위한 시사점을 간략하게 제언하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the significance of parent club participation in order to shed new lights on the status and role of parents as educational subjects. The analysis was conducted by the in-depth interviews with seven parents who participated in parent clubs in Innovation Schools at an elementary level in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. The significance of parent club participation was revealed as two aspects.
As a positive aspect, parent club participation empowered parents as meaningful educational subjects in their schools. Through parent club activities, they constructed collaborative relationships with teachers in which they acted as supporters and partners for better education. As educational subjects, they were not able only to understand individual characteristics and relationships of students, and also strengthened their sense of belonging and connectedness as a member of a school community. In addition, they felt a sense of accomplishment through participating in educational activities with their children and then designed their future lives by obtaining opportunities to develop their capabilities related to education. Parent club activities also made parents reflected blind scholasticism and selfishness in education, and endeavor to show modeled behaviors for their children.
However, several constraints on parent club participation were also discovered by parents’interviews. On the school level, teacher transfer, school budget reduction, and excessive pressure for parents to participate in too many school activities threatened the self-development of parent club in Innovation schools. On the parent level, parental burnouts arose because of the increase of a double-income family and the following decrease of parental participation rates in school activities. It was also concerned about a closed factionalization caused by the increasing gap in capabilities and voluntary participation rates between activist parents and other parents. Finally, It was pointed out a biased perspective on parental involvement in school activities as a so-called ‘skirt wind’ and the passive attitudes from parents who were confined by their own child-centered framework. Based on the findings from those positivize implications and practical constraints, the ideal status and role of parents as educational subjects were discussed and implications for vitalizing parental participation in parent club and school activities were suggested.
