제주와 몽골의 ‘돌 신앙’ －신체(神體)의 산육신적 특성을 중심으로－ (A study on the stone faith of Jeju and Mongolia－focused on the characteristics of the divinity for bearing and raising in the body of deity－)

초록

본 논문에서는 제주와 몽골의 돌 신체(神體)의 산육신적 양상과 특징을 살펴보았다. 제주와 몽골의 포태와 산육신의 기능을 하는 신체의 특성을 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 두 지역의 산육신으로서의 돌 신체는 자연신앙을 기반으로 만물에 영(정령)이 거한다는 애니미즘을 바탕으로 하지만, 몽골의 경우 페티시즘 및 원시 주술적인 신앙 형태를 좀 더 많이 띤다. 둘째, 두 지역의 자식의 포태와 산육을 돕는 생산신으로서의 바위 신체는 주로 모신(母神)의 특성을 가지며, 물과 밀접한 관련을 갖는다. 셋째, 제주의 기자치성의 돌 신체는 주로 ‘미륵’으로 불리는데, 이는 전통적인 용신앙과 관련되며 칠성신앙과도 일정한 관련이 있는 것으로 보인다. 몽골의 경우는, 기자신앙의 신체는 생산과 풍요를 보장하는 대지신앙―지모신 신앙과 관련이 있다. 넷째, 두 지역 모두 포태와 산육신은 여성신격이 지배적이지만 남성신격도 이에 관여한다. 다섯째, 제주의 기자 신체는 무속적 자연신체이면서도 미륵으로 불리거나 절에 모셔지기도 하며, 유․불․무교의 제의의 대상이 되는 혼합적인 성격을 띠기도 한다. 그러나 그 중심은 무속이 지배적인 위치를 점한다. 이에 반해 몽골은 거의 무속의 자연신앙 형태가 중심을 이룬다. 여섯째, 두 지역 모두 자연석을 신체로 삼는데, 제주의 경우 자연석이면서 조야한 인간의 얼굴 모습을 새겨 넣은 것도 있고, 인공적인 석상인 경우도 있다. 몽골의 경우는 대부분 자연석이지만 주로 어떤 특정한 형태를 가진 바윗돌이 신앙시되어 왔다. 또 무덤에 세워졌던 석인상도 모신의 기능을 담당하기도 한다. 두 지역에 기자신앙의 대상이 되는 돌 신체의 양상에는 몇 가지 차이가 있지만 근본적으로 자연신앙을 중심으로 하는 무속을 근간으로 한다는 유사한 특징을 보여준다.

영어초록

In this paper, it is observed what are various aspects and features of the divinity for bearing and raising in the stone body of deity showed in Shamanism in Jeju and Mongolia. The characteristics of the body of deity which functions as the divinity for conception, bearing and raising in Jeju and Mongolia are as follows.
First, the rock body of deity as the divinity of production who helps to conceive, bear and raise the child in two areas, has primarily the characteristics of the Mother Goddess and a close relationship with water. Second, the stone body of deity which becomes the object of devotedly praying for the child in Shamanism of Jeju, is mainly called as 'Maitreya', which seems to have to do with the the traditional faith of dragon and also seems to have a certain relationship with a religious belief of the Great Bear(Seven Star).
In Mongolia, the body of deity which becomes the object of devotedly praying for the child, is related with the faith of Goddess Mother of the Earth, which is a religious belief of the Mother Earth ensuring production and fertileness.
Third, about the divinity for conception, bearing and raising in both area all, the feminine godhood is dominative but masculine godhood is also involved in this.
Fourth, the body of deity which becomes the object of devotedly praying for the child in Jeju, has a form of the shamanistic natural body of deity, and also shows the mixed character such as being called as 'Maitreya' or enshrined in the Buddhist temple or becoming the object of rituals by Confucianism, Buddhism, Shamanism. But Shamanism has the dominative central position among those mixed religious forms, in contrast, almost natural religious form of Shamanism has the central position in Mongolia.
Fifth, the natural stone is worshiped as the body of deity in both area all, there are some type of natural stone carved with plain human faces and other type of artificial stone statues in Jeju.
In case of the Mongolia, there are almost natural stones but a certain particular form of rocks has been worshiped. Also stone (human) statue erected around the grave has the function as the Mother Goddess. There are a few different aspects of the stone body of deity which becomes the object of devotedly praying for the child but it shows essentially similar characteristics.
