문순태 소설의 지형도 연구 (A study on Topography in the Novel of Moon Sun-tae)

초록

본 연구는 작품을 배제한 작가론은 한 작가의 일반적 전기로 그치고 마는 것처럼, 작가에 대한 고려 없는 작품론도 구조에 대한 메마른 분석에 치우칠 우려가 있다고 보고 한 작가의 총체적인 문학 세계를 제대로 규명하려면 작품론과 작가론을 함께 아우르는 소설의 지형도 연구가 필요하다는 문제의식에서 출발했다. 현대 작가 중 문순태는 씨줄로 어린 시절 경험했던 전쟁의 맹목성과 가난의 참혹함, 그로 인한 황폐한 삶의 역정을 소설세계의 질료로 삼으면서, 날줄로 당대 현실의 문제를 아울러서 두 줄의 긴장 상태를 유지하며 서사화하는 특징을 보이고 있다. 이에 본고는 단순한 연대기적 사실만을 나열하는 것이 아니라 당대의 상황과 그에 대한 작가 의식이 투영된 작품을 초기, 중기, 후기로 나누어 작가 의식의 변모 과정을 살핀 후, 각 시기에 따른 작품의 특징을 밝혀 전체 소설의 지형도를 완성하는 데 목적을 두었다.
먼저 문순태의 작가 연보, 작품 연보, 시대 상황, 구술에 의한 생애사를 조사 한 후, 이를 통해 작품에 투사된 작가 의식이 초기, 중기, 후기로 가면서 어떻게 변모되고 있는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 초기, 중기, 후기 전체 작품 세계를 아우를 수 있는 중핵이 ‘고향 의식’임을 밝혔다. 초기 소설에서 고향은 아버지에게 억울하게 ‘빨갱이’라는 낙인이 찍힌 곳으로 돌아가고 싶지 않는 ‘원한의 땅’이었다. 중기 소설에서 5․18광주민주화운동으로 인한 기자 해직과 ‘무고한 죽음’이 분단의 고착화로 인해 빚어졌음을 직시하면서부터 고향은 ‘통한의 땅’이 되었다. 후기 소설에서는 고향에 돌아와서 스스로 울타리를 제거하면서 고향은 ‘해한의 땅’이 되었다.
다음으로 각 시기에 따른 작품의 특징을 살펴본 결과, 문순태의 대부분 소설은 이전 작품 속에 씨앗이 발아하고 있다가, 현실의 문제와 융합하면서 새로운 주제로 확산하고 있음을 밝혔다. 초기 소설에서 씨줄은 ‘고향과 분단’을, 날줄은 이촌 향도한 사람들이 도시에서 지렁이처럼 밑바닥 인생을 살고 있는 현실을 핍진하게 묘사했으며, 중기 소설에서 씨줄은 유년 시절에 경험했던 원체험을 통해 분단된 민족이 가야할 방향성에 대해 역사적 맥락에서 살폈으며, 날줄은 당대 현실의 교육 문제와 5․18민주화운동을 형상화하면서 주제가 ‘고향․분단․5․18민주화운동’으로 확산되었고, 후기 소설에서 씨줄은 귀향 후 고향 사람들과 생활하면서 인간다운 삶의 복원을 위해 노력했으며, 날줄은 노년문제와 다문화문제 그리고 생태 환경에 관심을 가지면서 주제가 ‘고향․분단․노년․다문화․생태환경’으로 넓어졌다.
본고는 그 동안 작가론과 작품론이 따로 연구되고 있는 실정에서 문순태의 작가론과 작품론을 하나로 아울러서 전체 소설의 지형도를 완성했다. 본고의 이러한 시도는 앞으로 다른 작가의 작품 연구로 그 지평을 확장할 수 있고, 문순태 작품 분석 연구에서도 그 깊이를 더할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영어초록

This study was conducted with the awareness that it is necessary to study the topography of novels along with the study of works and the study of the author in order to understand an author's world of literature comprehensively. Moon Sun-tae, a contemporary author, writes characterized epics by tightly weaving together the blindness of war and brutality of poverty from his childhood and the barren life of wrath as the weft of his novel with the contemporary issues as the warp. This study does not list the facts chronologically, but discusses the author's awareness in the early, middle, and late terms based on the temporary situations and the work that reflects the author's awareness. Then, it clarified the characteristics of work from each time to complete the topography of the novels.
First, it studied Moon Sun-tae's chronology, chronology of his work, contemporary time, and verbally told story of life. Then, it discussed how the author's awareness reflected on his work changed through the early, middle, and late periods. As a result, it was found that the very core that penetrates the early, middle, and late periods was the ‘notion of hometown.’ In the early novels, the hometown was an undesired 'land of grudge' where the character was unfairly accused of being a 'communist' by his father. In the mid-term novels, the hometown became a 'land of grief' where the character admits that his dismissal from the reporter job due to the 5․18 Gwangju Democratic Movement and ‘innocent death’ were caused by the anchoring of division. In the late novels, the hometown became a 'land of resolution' where the character returns to the hometown to remove the fences himself.
Next, the characteristics of work from each time were discussed and found that most novels of Moon Sun-tae sprouted the seeds in the early period and expanded to new themes in combination with contemporary issues. Early novels depicted the verisimilitude of reality with the 'hometown and division' as the weft and the lowest lives of people who move to the city as the warp. In the mid-term novels, the weft was the direction of a divided country in the historical context based on his childhood experience and the warp was the contemporary problems related to education and the 5․18 Democratic Movement to expand the theme to ‘hometown․division․5․18 Democratic Movement.’ In the late novels, the weft was the effort to recover the authenticity of life while living with the people back in the hometown and the warp expanded to 'hometown, division, aging, multi-culture, and ecological environment' as the author gained interests in elderly issues, multi-cultural issues, and ecological issues.
This study completed the topography of all novels based on the study of Moon Sun-tae and his work when the authors and their work have been studied separately. The attempt of this study is expected to be expanded to the study of other authors and add depth to the analysis of the work of Moon Sun-tae.
