초록

〈진하도(국립중앙박물관 소장)〉는 1783년에 열린 사도세자와 혜경궁 홍씨의 상존호례에 이어 치루어진 진하례를 주제로 하고 있다. 이날의 상존호례는 세자의 탄생을 조상에게 감사드린다는 명분으로 발의되었지만 그 실질적인 의도는 사도세자의 복권이었다고 볼 수 있다. 사도세자의 복권은 정조의 숙원사업이었지만 정치적으로 민감한 사안이기도 했다. 정조는 신하들의 지지를 통해 명분을 얻을 필요가 있었고 이를 위해 자신의 친위 세력인 규장각 각신을 적극 활용하였다. 진하 의례에서 규장각 각신을 인정전 전내로 승전시킨 것은 이러한 조치 중 하나였다고 할 수 있다.
본〈진하도〉는 당시 진하례에 승전한 각신들이 주관한 계병이다. 동일한 각신들이 2년 전 제작한〈幸院會講圖屛〉의 선례- 어명에 의해 계병 제작을 발의하되, 관원들이 주체가 되어 추진하였으며, 1건은 진상하고, 나머지는 나누어 갖았던 예를 통해 볼 때 이 역시 같은 방식으로 제작과 분급이 이루어졌을 것으로 추정한다. 이처럼 왕이 발의하고 신하가 응수하는 본 계병의 제작방식은 신하들의 경축을 통해 우회적으로 왕실행사의 권위를 강화하는 진하례의 의미와도 맞닿아 있다.
〈진하도〉의 의례장면과 관아의 장면은 이러한 진하례의 의미를 잘 드러내고 있다. 진하례 의식은 왕과 신하가 경축의 인사를 주고받는 가운데 신하들이 천세를 부르고 네 번 씩 절을 올리는 구성을 하고 있다.
이렇게 볼 때 진하례는 신하들이 올리는 행사이지만, 왕이 신하에게 행사의 의미를 전달하고 그들의 입과 행동으로 이를 재확인한다는 점에서 군주의 입장을 강화하는 행사의 마무리라고 할 수 있다.〈 진하도〉의 의례 장면은 특정 순간의 의식을 재현한 것이 아니라 기물과 인물의 배열을 통해 앞서 말한 의례의 모든 순간을 개념적으로 시각화하였다. 또한 정조연간에 개편된 관료질서를 반영하는〈正衙朝會之圖〉를 충실히 재현함으로써 통치체제의 확립도 표방하였다. 한편 중앙의 인정전을 궐내각사가 좌우에서 둘러싼 구도는 이상적인 군신관계의 구도를 표방하고 있으며, 이는 진하례의 의미를 구조적으로 강화하고 있다고 할 수 있다.
정조는 영조의 뒤를 이어 의례를 통한 왕실 현창사업을 활발하게 진행하였다. 그러나 항상 선왕의 전례를 앞세우고 검소함을 주장하여, 자신을 위해 왕실 사업을 장대하게 한다는 비난을 피하고자 하였다.
어명으로 왕실 행사도를 그리는 것이 쉽지 않았던 것은 이러한 배경에서 이해되어야 할 것이다.〈 진하도〉는 경축 행사라는 소재와 계병이라는 형식을 통해 군주에게는 명분을 신하에게는 특권을 부여한 사례라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The eight-fold screen, Congratulatory Ceremony Offered to the King(Jinhado, 陳賀圖, National Museum of Korea) depicts the celebration that held by the subjects in 1783 offered to the King Jeongjo in order to congratulate the offering the eulogistic titles to the Crown Prince Sado and his wife, Princess Hyaegeong. It was one of the many projects that King Jeongjo planned to rehabilitate the honor of his father, Crown Prince Sado, who was victimized by party strife, while simultaneously securing his own legitimacy. King Jeongjo needed the countenance from the subjects to accomplish the project of rehabilitation. During the ceremony of celebration, he allowed his courtiers, Kyujanggak officials to ‘rise to the palace building(Seongjeon, 陞殿)’and sit in front of the king’s chair, where only the royal guards and secretaries were positioned. It is assumed that this special treatment was given to Kyujanggak officials in order to display the support from the subjects.
This screen of Congratulatory Ceremony was ordered by the Kyujanggak officials who participated in the ceremony. The screen does not include the preface that indicates the specific purpose of the screen but it conveys names of 12 officials under the title of “the name lists of Kyujanggak officials who rose to the palace building(陞殿閣臣座目).”The detailed process of order and distribution of this screen is not known, however, the precedent that the same officials ordered the screen two years ago, may give us a clue. According to the preface of the previous case, the screen making was initiated by the King Jeongjo to commemorate the officials’participation of King’s lecture, but the actual process of ordering was managed by the officials. After the completion of multiple screens, one was offered to the king, and the others were distributed to each one of officials. It is likely that this screen of Congratulatory Ceremony went through the similar process. The use of word, ‘servant(臣)’ before each of their names in the lists, implies that this might be the screen that offered to the king.
This way of ordering the screen in which the king initiates and the subjects respond to his suggestion, resonates with the meaning of congratulatory ceremony, which was held by the subjects but intended to support the justification of the royal ceremony.
The scene of ceremony and the background buildings in the screen effectively reveal this meaning of congratulatory ceremony. The ceremony scene does not choose to depict one moment of the rite but it conceptually visualized every step of the rite. Moreover, the position of the officers, guards and the banners accurately follows the new diagram of positioning order which was practically and symbolically intended to display the establishment of governing order in the Jeongjo’era. The composition that the office buildings surround the ceremonial building in the center implies the ideal relationship between the king and his subject and it also structurally support the meaning of the congratulatory ceremony.
King Jeongjo actively used the royal ceremonies to strengthen the royal authority during his reign.
However, he often referred to his predecessor as a pretext and emphasized the ceremony to be simple and modest in order to avoid criticism from the subjects. The reason why it was difficult to order the screen on royal ceremony directly by the king himself may be found in this situation that King Jeongjo confronted. The screen of Congratulatory Ceremony is supposed to be functioned as a justification to the king and privilege to his subject.
