초록

通事는 직능상 使行에 차출되어 주로 통역의 임무를 갖는 이들을 지칭한다. 다시 말해 사역원 소속의 譯官이 곧 통사가 아니라 이들 중 사행에 참여하여 통역의 임무를 갖는 이들이 통사였다.
또한 통사는 對明 使行에 참여하지 않고도 出來 明使의 접대 때에 통역을 위해 차임되기도 하였다. 그러나 이때의 통사는 사역원 출신 譯官 뿐만 아니라 文科 出身의 文官이 차출되는 경우도 있었다. 문과 출신의 文官이 통사로 차출되는 경우는 御前通事로 차임되었다.
그런데 조선초기에는 급박한 외교현안 문제 등으로 출래한 명사들이 많았음에도 불구하고 문과 출신의 인물을 어전통사로 차임되는 경우보다는 사역원 출신의 역관이 주로 차임되었다. 하지만 조선초기를 지나 중기로 접어들면서 문과 출신의 인물이 어전통사로 차임되는 빈도가 잦아진다.
이러한 이유는 첫째, 왕조초기인 태조·태종대에는 제도상으로 한어와 이문을 專掌하는 부서를 독립시키고, 한편으로 漢吏科를 실시하는 등 漢語와 吏文의 학습을 적극적으로 장려하고, 대명 외교문서의 작성과 通解에 필수적인 漢吏學이 성행하여 외교문서를 通解하는 인재가 많았기 때문이다.
둘째, 세종·성종·중종대에 이르러 吏文學이 독립적인 교육의 대상에서 제외되었고, 또한 명과의 표·전문 등의 외교문서 작성이나, 명의 조서나 칙서 등을 정확히 通解하기 위해 기회가 있을 때마다 명측에 자제들의 입학을 청원하였지만, 이 또한 좌절되었기 때문이다.
셋째, 자제입학의 대안으로 ‘講肄質正官’을 파견하는 등 여러 가지 장려책이 강구되기는 하였지만 별 실효를 거두지는 못하였기 때문이다.
넷째, 조선초기 통사의 활동에 주목했던 국왕의 기대에 부응하였던 것에 비해 통사가 점차 기대 수준에 미치지 못하였기 때문이다.
다섯째, 통사들의 致富와 신분상의 문제로 사대부의 통사에 대한 인식이 낮아지면서 정치적·사회적 부담을 국왕스스로 맡지 않았기 때문이다.
여섯째, 조선초기에 통사로 활발한 활동을 하던 이들 중 중국어에 능통했던 귀화인이 점차 소멸되었기 때문이다.
일곱째, 중종대 이후 ‘宗系문제’가 再點火되고 이의 辨誣문제로 明使 접대에 더 신중을 기하기 위해 문과 출신의 문관을 어전통사로 차임하였기 때문이다.
이러한 이유 등으로 조선초기에는 통사 출신과 문관 출신이 비슷한 비율로 어전통사로 차임되다가, 조선중기로 접어들면서 어전통사는 점차 문과 출신의 문신에서 차임하게 되었던 것이다.

영어초록
