허영호의 1930·40년대 불교교육 활동과 동국대 (Heo Youngho’s Buddhist Educational Activity and Dongguk University in 1930～40)

초록

본 연구는 허영호의 1930·40년대 불교교육 활동을 추적하고, 특히 동국대학교의 전신인 중앙불교전문학교와 혜화전문학교, 동국대학을 이끌었던 내용과 그 의의를 살펴본 연구이다.
허영호는 대정대학 불교학과 유학 후 이듬해인 19334년 중앙불교전문학교의 학감에 보임되면서 해방직후 초대 동국대학 학장에 이르기 까지 동국대를 주도하였다. 근대 불교 교육가로서 근대 불교인식으로 불교계 활동을 전개하면서 교육 현장에서 활동한 교육 실천가였다.
중앙불교전문학교의 학감겸 교수에 재임하면서 만당과 조선불교총동맹 제 2대 집행위원장, 중앙불전 교우회 총무 등 불교청년운동에 적극적으로 활동하였다.
허영호는 조선불교 교무원 평위원과 이사로, 종정 방한암의 사서로 활동하면서 혜화전문학교 이사장으로 취임하였으며, 해방후 혜화전문학교의 교장으로 복교하였으며, 동국대 초대의 학장으로 동국대를 이끌면서 교단과 불교혁신총연맹의 알륵을 중재하기도 하였다.
허영호는 일제의 강압에 저항을 하였으며, 생애 후반부에 일제 불교라는 영역에서 협력하였지만 근대불교의 개혁과 근대 불교교육의 학자이자 실천자 였다. 허영호는 김법린과 뜻을 같이하며 불교청년운동에 참여하면서 불교 현실을 바로 인식하고 근대 불교개혁의 요체가 불교교육이라고 주창하였다. 그의 교육 방법 및 내용은 현대 대학과정 수업과 크게 다르지 않았으며, 특히 동국대 초대 학장으로서 재단을 이끌면서 중앙불교전문학교 이래 표방해왔던 재가자를 포함한 불교학은 물론이고 인문학 분야 까지 확대하는 학교의 표상을 정립하고자 하였다.

영어초록

This dissertation is to trace back Heo Youngho’s buddhist educational activity in 1930～40, especially for Jung’ang Buddhist Special College and Hyehwa Special College, the previous models of Dongguk University, I looked over the story that he led this school and its significance.
He led Dongguk University after his study in the department of Buddhism, Daejeong University, in the following year, 1934, Heo Youngho was designated as the dean of Jung’ang Buddhist special college, and then right after the Korea’s liberation, he was inaugurated as the first president of Dongguk University.
He was an educational doer who carried out his thought in the real educational field by developing Buddhist activities with modern Buddhist recognition as a modern Buddhist educator.
While re-serving a dean and a professor of Jung’ang Buddhist special college, he actively worked for Buddhist youth movements, Mandang and the 2nd director in the Confederation of Joseon Buddhism, General affairs in the alumni of Jung’ang Buddhist college etc.
And also Heo Youngho worked for a director and a member of secretaries in Joseon Buddhism, inaugurated as the chief director of Hyehwa special college working for the librarian of Supreme Patriarch, Bang Han’am, he reinstated as the principal of Hyehwa special college after Korea’s emancipation, and he arbitrated the conflict between the religious body and the Confederation of Buddhist Innovation leading Dongguk University as the first president.
He resisted against oppression of Japan, in the latter part of his life, he cooperated in the area of Japanese Buddhism, but he also was a scholar and a doer of innovation of modern Buddhism and Modern Buddhist Education.
Heo Youngho shared an intention with Kim Beoprin, he insisted that the key factor of modern Buddhist innovation was Buddhist education recognizing the reality of Buddhism precisely participating into the Buddhist youth movement.
His educational methodology and its content was not much different from the classes of the current college course, especially by leading the foundation as the first president of Dongguk University, he tried to establish the symbol of school which had an intention to expand the range from the Buddhist study including ordinary people to the field of humanities after the claim as Jung’ang Buddhist special college.
