中國 불교의 九曜圖像 연구 - 당․송대 熾盛光如來圖像을 중심으로- (Reasearch of the Navagraha in Chinese Buddhism)

초록

불교와 도교의 星宿圖像은 각기 인도와 중국이라는 다른 천문전통에서 출발하였으나, 후대에는 구분 짓는 것이 무의미할 정도로 여러 측면에서 혼합되어 나타난다. 그리고 밀교의 전래와 더불어 중국에서도 인간의 길흉에 행성의 운행이 관련되어 있다고 믿는 구요신앙이 유행하기 시작하여 미술작품으로 제작되었다. 중국불교에서 8～9세기 九曜圖像은 개념적인 부분에서 인도의 것과 유사성을 보이고 있으나 세부적인 도상형태에서 상이함을 보이는 것도 적지 않았다. 불교 구요상에 영향을 주었다고 생각되는 도교적인 작품에 그려진 五星像에서는 도상형성 초기부터 인도 도상의 誤認 혹은 중국 전통의 영향 등으로 인하여 인도와는 전혀 다른 새로운 도상이 창출되고 있는 것을 살필 수 있었다.
이처럼 중국에서 인도로 부터 새로운 개념의 星像을 받아들여 작품으로 표현하는 과정에서 신선의 羽衣를 입히거나, 혹은 홀판을 가진 卿相으로 표현하기도 하고 三足烏와 두꺼비를 상징으로 하는 日月像과 같은 지역전통적인 특성을 혼합하여 친근하고 익숙한 모습으로 변형시킨 것은 자연스러운 현상이라고 생각된다. 그리고 이는 불교와 도교의 성수 도상이 서로 상호교류를 가지고 발전하였다는 것을 의미함과 동시에 인도의 구요신앙을 받아들이면서 중국에서 맹목적으로 그것을 복제하지 않았다는 것을 의미하는 것이기도 하다.

영어초록

Navagraha(九曜), the followers of the Tejaprabha Buddha(金輪佛頂熾盛光如來) in Chinese Buddhism is a kind of astrolatry that flourished in the Tang(唐) dynasty when the Tantric Buddhism(密敎) was introduced from India. This is based on a belief that movement of the nine celestial bodies-the sun(日曜), the moon(月曜), Mars(火曜), Mercury(水曜), Jupiter(木曜), Venus(金曜), Saturn(土曜), the Rahu(羅睺) and the Ketu(計都)- has a tremendous impact on human lives, fortune and misfortune. It is supposed that the notion of the Navagraha thrived in early 8th century, when the Sutras about it were translated.
There are two reasons why the foreign astrolatry, or the Navagraha was so prosperous. One is that astronomy introduced from India and Central Asia was nationally authorized in the dynasty, and the other is that it is more familiar than other foreign beliefs because the Seven Stars(七曜) had been already worshipped as a folk belief ‘七政‘ in Taoism.
The Navagraha in Chinese Buddhism was distinctively analyzed and pretty differently interpreted from that of Hinduism in India. It seems natural that the icon of the Navagraha had become a closer form to people of the times in the process of being formed from the new indian concept about stars. In that process, the unique and distinctive chinese-Navagraha icon was made because of factors like mistranslation of the Sutras, traditional chinese icons, especially the taoistic star-icons influenced by the indian Navagraha icons before the formation of the buddhistic ones.
Artworks about the Navagraha show confusion of the icons between two religions at first stage of its formation. This 'confusion' became perfectly 'fusion' as time passes, when comparing the taoistic Navagraha icons with the buddhistic ones in the Yuan(元) or the Ming(明) dynasty. So the Navagraha icons are supposed to became more traditional and less exotic. This change is shown on some examples: Images of the Samjeok-Oh(三足烏) and rabbit which are carved on the portable props in the images of the Sun(日曜) and the Moon(月曜) under the Song(宋) dynasty, the celestial robe of the Saturn(土曜) and the change of Navagraha's form holding a scepter, which is easily seen on each side of the Taoistic three adorable ones(三尊像).
Therefore, the reason why the foreign belief Navagraha could have been so flourished and became a typical astrolatry for a long time in East Asia is that it went through lots of familiarization and fusion in its transmission.
