5･18 피해보상 소재 소설과 ‘피해자다움’: 80년대 후반 피해보상 국면을 중심으로 (A Study on the Representation of Purity of Victimhood and Its Entanglement in Novels Based on the May 18 Victim Compensation: Focusing on the Compensation Phase in the Late 1980s)

초록

본 연구는 1980년대 후반 5･18 보상국면에 쓰인 네 편의 피해보상 소재 소설들을 대상으로 ‘피해자’ 표상의 형상화 방식과 특징을 검토한다. 1987년 6월을 계기로 개헌을 통해 형식적으로나마 민주화된 사회로 이행해 가면서 5･18의 ‘진실’은 제도권 내에서 공론화되기 시작한다. 제도화 과정에서 사건을 축소･부인하려 했던 노태우 정부는 민주화합추친위원회를 조직해 때 이른 ‘화해’와 ‘보상’을 추진한다. 5･18 제도화 이전의 ‘은폐/진실’ 구도는 제도화 과정에서 ‘피해보상/진상규명’의 구도로 변모하게 되고, ‘피해보상’은 ‘배상’이 아니었다는 점, 진상규명을 무마하기 위해 제안되었다는 점에서 도덕적 이분법을 형성한다. ‘피해보상’을 받는다는 것은 적어도 ‘진상규명’의 필요성을 지지하지 않거나 외면하는 것으로 이해되었다.
이 시기 5･18의 문학적 ‘진실’은 ‘항쟁’의 상징으로서 재구성된다. 이 과정에서 ‘항쟁’을 중심으로 규범화된 ‘피해자’ 표상이 강조된다. 반면에, ‘피해보상’과 피해자에 관한 맥락은 상대적으로 비가시화 되고 숭고한 정신의 상징으로 영웅화된 피해자 표상은 금전적인 보상과 연동되지 못한다. 하지만 피해자의 삶에는 공적 지평으로 완전히 환원될 수 없는 부분들이 필연적으로 선재하며, 규범화된 ‘진실’의 일관된 맥락에 포섭될 수 없는 지점들은 재검토할 필요가 있다. 따라서 본고는 5･18 제도화 과정에서 형성된 ‘피해보상/진상규명’의 구도와 규범적 ‘피해자’ 표상과 얽혀 있는 5･18피해자소설의 피해자 형상화 방식과 특징을 검토함으로써, 규범적 ‘피해자’ 표상의 ‘피해자다움’과 제도화된 문학적 상상력을 재사유할 수 있는 가능성을 모색하고자 했다.

영어초록

This study aims to examine the way of representation and characteristics of the ‘victim’ in four novels focused on victim compensation during the May 18 compensation phase in the late 1980s. Following the June 1987 democratic transition, which formally shifted the society toward democratization through constitutional amendments, the ‘truth’ of the May 18 began to be publicly discussed within the institutional framework. The government of Roh Tae-woo, which had attempted to downplay and deny the event, organized the Committee for Democracy and Reconciliation and promoted premature ‘reconciliation’ and ‘compensation.’ Before the institutionalization of the May 18, the ‘concealment/truth’ framework transformed into the ‘victim compensation/verification of truth’ framework, creating a moral dichotomy, as ‘victim compensation’ was not ‘reparation’ and was proposed to suppress the demand for truth. Receiving ‘victim compensation’ was understood at least as obstructing the necessity of ‘truth verification.’During this period, the literary ‘truth’ of the May 18 was reconstructed as a symbol of ‘resistance.’ In this process, the normativized representation of the ‘victim’ centered around the ‘resistance’ became emphasized. In contrast, the context of ‘victim compensation’ and the victims themselves were relatively invisible, and the representation of victims, symbolized as a sublime spirit, was not connected to financial compensation. However, there are inevitably aspects of the victims' lives that cannot be fully reduced to the public sphere, and points that cannot be incorporated into the consistent context of normativized ‘truth’ need to be reconsidered. Therefore, this paper aims to examine how the morally normative 'victim' representation, through the 'victim compensation/truth verification' framework during the May 18 institutionalization process, is represented in the May 18 victim compensation novels to reconsider the pressure of 'moral purity' and institutionalized literary imagination of the normative 'victim' representation.
