초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the publication purposes and characteristics of genealogical tables through the “Genealogical Table of Dalseong Seo Family(1769).” The genealogical table contains the records of people of various family names who formed relationships with the Dalseong Seo family through marriage as well as the direct descendants of the family. There were 3,082 male and 1,034 female direct descendants of the family in the genealogical table. The smaller number of female direct descendants can be explained by the practice that only women with a husband were allowed in a genealogical table. Those findings indicate that women made in the genealogical table of the Dalseong Seo family only when they served the roles of a link between families. The genealogical table of the Dalseong Seo family also contains 4,325 individuals of different family names including 1,191 spouses of men in the Dalseong Seo family, 880 father-in-laws, 1,026 son-in-laws, 838 descendants in the daughter's line, 390 great-grandchildren in the daughter's line, which shows that a genealogical table was put to active use for expanding a family's network with other families through marriage in addition to promoting the unity of the family.
The genealogical table of the Dalseong Seo family provides little information on the family's expansion within the minimum scope of Donggojo eight chons, which is confirmed with the generation characters and the kinsman scope of adoption. As for the use of the generation characters, more than 60% shared them only among brothers or within the six chons in the early and middle 18th century. Adoptions happened only within the six chons regardless of periods in most cases. Given that the perceived scope of a family expands further with the increasing chons for adoption, there are few data to show the expansion of the Dalseong Seo family beyond the eight chons.
The family witnessed less severe status discriminations among the members than other families, which is confirmed with the ways children born of concubines and Hyangris were recorded in the genealogical table. It is thus found that there were some families that were not completely incorporated into the nobility-centric clan rules and orders even if they already published their genealogical tables in the middle 18th century.
