사회·경제적 여건의 변화와 테크놀로지의 급속한 발전에 따라 대학 진학의 이유나 고등교육의 목적은 갈수록 경제적인 부의 획득에 맞춰지고 있다.1) 취업난은 해를 거듭할수록 심각해지고 있으며, 기업에서는 업무 수행에 직접적으로 활용할 수 있는 능력을 갖춘 인재 양성을 요구하고 있다. 그에 따라 고등교육, 특히 교양교육의 도구화에 대한 요구가 커지고 있다.2) 그러나 우리의 삶과 그 현장에서 해결해야 할 문제들은 영역별로 분립되어 있기보다는 서로 결합되어 있는 것이기 때문에 다양한 주제의 교차와 융합을 통한 ‘Big Question 교육’이필요하고, ‘지식과 사고의 확장을 위한 플랫폼’으로서 교양교육을 이해할 필요가 있다.3) 그럼에도 불구하고 교양교육에 대하여 대학 구성원들의 편견과 오해는 좀처럼 개선되지 않고 있다.이와 같은 문제점을 개선하기 위하여 최근 우리나라에서는 교양기초교육을 정상화하고 강화하기 위한 움직임이 확산되고 있다. 대전대학교 H-LAC, 가천대학교 G-LAC, 대구대학교 S-LAC 등 Liberal Arts College 의 등장은 그 단적인 사례라고 할 수 있다. 그것이 기초학문의 위기 극복을 위한 부득이한 선택의 결과였든, 아니면 대학 특성화를 위한 자발적 노력의 산물이었든, Liberal Arts College의 등장은 한국의 대학 교육에 새로운 바람을 일으키고 있다.
이 글은 수도권 대규모 사립대학인 단국대학교가 교육혁신을 통한 대학 특화 전략의 일환으로 추진하고 있는 Liberal Arts College 준비 과정을 소개하고, liberal education의 성공적 운영을 위하여 각계의 조언을구하기 위한 목적에서 기필되었다.4)

영어초록

Dankook University, which has been building student competency management system 'YOUNG Bear Story' and artificial intelligence based education support system 'DanAI', has been preparing for another challenge with the reorganization of the university structure in 2020. By transforming general education college into liberal arts college, it is trying to innovate undergraduate education by reorganizing existing general education into liberal education program.
This article introduces Liberal Arts College preparation course which Dankook University, a large private university in the metropolitan area, is promoting as a part of university-specific strategy through education innovation and aims to seek advice for successful implementation of liberal education. Dankook University developed Liberal Arts College and Liberal Education Plan through "The Dankook University Future Education Innovation Plan"(2016), "A Study on the Long Term Development Plan for General Education College"(2017), "A Study on the Liberal Arts College management plan of Dankook University"(2018), the 2018 Future Education Forum, and the Future Education Innovation Promotion Committee(2018).
The Liberal Arts College, which seeks to implement 'a broad, deep, and solid education', aims at personal growth and human maturity of students through universal intellectual education, and aims at strong foundation of scholarship through solid basic education. We will take a bold step toward an ancient future to cultivate the creative talents required by the future society.
Liberal Arts College of Dankook University sets educational objectives as 'the formation of a holistic personality through universal intellectual education' and 'the foundation of scholarship through solid basic education', and tries to accomplish the educational goals through four strategies: operating the education curriculum with consideration for consistency with educational goals, adhering to the basic principles of the operation of the curriculum to ensure homogeneity of education, implementing practical education methods for solid basic education, and building and supporting infrastructures for liberal education. As a result, the liberal education curriculum is organized into core curriculum, common curriculum, and distribution areas. In order to implement liberal education, the dual appointment system of full-time teachers in the basic discipline is activated, and the double listing and cross-admission system of the major courses in basic discipline are operated.
Of course, not a little issues such as the integration of liberal arts college of the Jukjeon campus and the Cheonan campus, expanding the teachers for liberal education, securing lecture rooms and laboratories, the development of core curriculum and common curriculum remain. However, I hope to make full use of the capacity of Dankook University, which has built up the tradition of challenge and creation, to solve the given problems and to create a new milestone in university education. I would like to ask for your kind advice and encouragement so that the challenge of Dankook University will be accomplished successfully.
