초록

It should be noted that the studies of Spanish and Hispanic American History in Korean academia is still in its infancy. Professional researchers in the field began to appear only in the late 1990s and there are no more than 10 researchers who obtained their doctoral degree so far. What are the main causes of the paucity in the field compared to other European or North American History? It would be attributed to the ideas that the Hispanic World has little entered into a substantial relation with Koreans in several ways. However, this superficial approach to Hispanic World needs to be corrected considering the world’s past and rapidly changing realities. Spanish values and traditions－in religious and family life, in political and social organization－have made deep and lasting imprints on the large parts on the globe. In addition, Latin America is currently transforming itself to an important power block in international politics as well as in economic sphere. To Koreans, Latin America becomes one of major export markets that granted almost 70% of its whole trade surplus in 2006. In sum, the historical and actual importance of Hispanic World has been so enormous that it is worthwhile to pay growing attention to the ‘new’ world.
