미래 다산학 연구의 방향 모색 (Reflection on the Future Research Direction of Dasan Studies)

초록

이 글은 과거 백년 다산학 연구사를 돌아보며 미래 다산학 연구의 방향을 모색하고자기획한 글이다. 다산 정약용은 1930년대 여유당전서를 공간한 식민시 시대 지식인들에 의해 호명되었다. 시대의 긴박한 요구에 의해 다산의 학문은 민주와 민권, 경제적 평등, 부국강병의 논리를 내장한 주체적인 개혁안으로 평가받았다. 해방 후 1960-70년대내재적 발전론의 시야에서도 다산학과 실학은 여전히 서구적 발전경로에 기반한 근대적학문으로 독해되었다. 2000년 전후 다산의 예학에 대한 구체적 분석이 시작되면서 그의경세론을 서구근대의 모델이 아닌 유교사회의 내적 흐름에 맞춰 조명하려는 연구경향이확대되었다. 이른바 예치적 경세론이라고 부를 만한 다산 경세학의 토대로서 예학 분야에 대한 전문연구가 활성화된 것이다. 다산은 국가례, 왕실례, 향례, 사가례 등 일관된 예치적 경세론을 통해 백성이 자발적으로 효제를 구현할 수 있는 덕정(德政)을 지향했으며, 형률과 법제를 예치의 보조 수단으로 간주했다. 이 글에서 주목한 상제･귀신론도 다산의예치적 경세론을 뒷받침하는 형이상학적 배경이라고 할 수 있다.
이런 관점을 기반으로 이 글에서는 미래 다산학 연구의 방향을 세 가지로 제시했다. 문헌 고증과 신자료 발굴, 다산학의 전체 성격 규명, 근대 및 동아시아 담론과의 비교 고찰이 그것이다. 이 중 다산학의 성격 규명과 관련된 세부주제를 보면, 다산 학문의 지적 배경을 이룬 중요 학파의 인물과 사상을 유기적으로 검토하는 일, 예치에 기반한 사회운영논리로 다산 경세학을 재구조화하는 작업, 예치적 경세론의 구도에서 다산의 심성론과수양론을 새롭게 독해하는 작업 등이 있다. 나아가 이런 포괄적 연구시야에서 볼 때 다산학이 오늘날 우리가 지향하는 보편적 인문주의 정신과 사회적 공공성에 기여할 수 있는지 평가하는 일도 요청될 것이다. 이런 엄정한 평가와 재해석이 오늘의 다산학을 살리고미래로 확장하는 지름길이 될 것이라고 기대한다.

영어초록

This article is designed to reflect on the research history of Dasan Studies over the past hundred years, aiming to explore the future direction of Dasan scholarship. Dasan Jeong Yakyong (1762-1836) was invoked by colonial Korean intellectuals who published Yeoyudang Jeonseo in the 1930s. Driven by the urgent needs of the times, Dasan's scholarship was recognized as an autonomous reform proposal that embedded the logic of democracy, civil rights, economic equality, and national strength. Even in the light of the immanent development theory popularized in the 1960s and 1970s after liberation, Dasan Studies and Practical Learning were still read as modern disciplines based on the Western development path.
Since the specific analysis of Dasan's Lixue (禮學, ritual scholarship, or rituals) began around the year 2000, there has been an expansion of research aiming to illuminate his social reform theory in line with the internal flow of Confucian society, rather than as a model of Western modern development. This led to the activation of specialized studies, particularly in the field of rituals, which could be called a social reform theory based on rituals. Jeong Yakyong presented a consistent and systematic social reform theory based on rituals at various levels, including national rituals, royal rituals, rituals in local communities, and rituals of private families. Through this, he advocated for an ethical politics where the common people could actively practice filial piety and deference. Dasan considered legal principles and legislation as auxiliary means of politics based on rituals. In this text, we can identify the ideological background supporting his political theory based on rituals, including the concept of the state, ancestral spirits, and metaphysics. The metaphysics of Emperor above (the Supreme Ruler) and ghosts, which I have focused on in this article, can also be seen as an ideological background that supports his ritual-based political theory.
Based on the above perspectives, this article suggests three directions for future research in Dasan Studies. First, the identification of archival and new sources, second, the clarifying the overall natures of Dasan scholarship, and third, the comparative examination of modernity and East Asian discourse. Among these, I propose the following detailed topics related to the characterization of Dasan scholarship. First, it is necessary to organically examine the figures and ideas of the major schools of thought that formed the intellectual background of Dasan scholarship; second, it is necessary to restructure Dasan's political theory in terms of the logic of ritual-based social management; and third, it is needed to read his theory of mind and discipline in the context of ritual-based political theory.
Furthermore, in this comprehensive research field, it will be necessary to evaluate whether Dasan scholarship can contribute to the universal humanistic value and social publicness that we aim for today. I expect that such a rigorous evaluation and reinterpretation will revitalize and extend Dasan scholarship into the future.
