『華城城役儀軌』와 『뎡니의궤』의 서지적 분석과 비교 (A Comparative Study between Hwasung Castle Construction Manual and Dungny Manual)

초록

이 연구는 한문본 『화성성역의궤』의 간행이 이루어지까지 과정과 현전하는 자료를 통해 그 가치를 되짚어 보고, 한문본과 함께 최근에 알려진 한글자료에 대해서 비교 검토하여 살펴본 것이다. 『화성성역의궤』는 1796년 11월 9일에 1차 편찬이 이루어졌지만 초고의 완성 이후 인쇄가 이루어지기까지 여러 차례의 교정과 편찬 체재의 변동이 있었다. 1800년 윤4월에 최종 편찬을 마치고 인쇄작업에 착수하게 되고 같은 해 5월 28일에는 구체적인 간행부수까지 정하였지만 약 한달 후 정조의 갑작스러운 昇遐로 인쇄가 중단 되었고, 이후 1801년 9월이 되어서야 금속활자인 정리자를 이용하여 10권 9책으로 간행되었다. 현존본은 국내 주요 소장처에 약 32종, 국외에 7종 정도를 확인하였다.
‘화성성역’을 포함하고 있는 한글본 『뎡니의궤』 13권 13책은 1797년 10월경에 작성된 것으로 정조가 어머니 혜경궁 홍씨를 위하여 제작한 것이 확인된다. 이번에 새로 발견된 권39를 비롯하여, 권40, 46, 47, 48까지 5책의 내용이 1794년(정조18) 1월부터 1796년(정조20) 9월까지 진행되었던 화성 성역에 관련된 것이다. 이 한글자료의 큰 특징은 대부분 기록이 날짜순으로 수록된 체계라는 것이다. 이는 곧 화성성역의 진행과정을 순서대로 파악할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다.
한글본 『뎡니의궤』 의 권39가 『화성성역의궤』와 마찬가지로 도판이 있는 卷首에 해당하고 권 40부터 본문이 시작됨을 알 수 있다. 권48이 마지막 권이므로 전체 10권으로 이루어졌을 것이다. 한글본 『뎡니의궤』의 “화성성역”은 한문본으로만 알려진 『화성성역의궤』의 내용과 많은 부분이 일치하고 있기 때문에 기존에 한문본 형태로만 남아있는 『화성성역의궤』에 대한 한글본 발굴이라는 의미도 있다. 또한 기존의 『화성성역의궤』에 대한 한글언해와 함께 수록되지 않은 새로운 화성성역의 기록까지 확인할 수 있다는 점에서 가치를 지닌다. 기존 문헌과의 비교결과 확연히 드러나는 37건의 내용을 확인할 수 있었고 이를 제시하였다. 하지만 한글본과 한문본에 이미 수록되어 동일한 내용을 다룬 것 중에도 독자의 이해를 돕기 위한 설명 등 알려지지 않은 소중한 기록들이 산재해 있는 것을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

The object of this study is to reassess the value of Hwasung Castle Construction Manual, which is written in Chinese, by examining the process of its publication and the existing materials, and to conduct comparative research between its Chinese character edition and recently discovered materials written in Korean. The first compilation of Hwasung Castle Construction Manual was accomplished on November 9, 1796, but there had been a series of proofreading drafts and a change in the method of compilation during the period between the completion of the first draft and printing. The printing started after the last compilation in the leap month of April, 1800, and the specific number of copies was determined on May 28 in the same year, but after about a month the printing was suspended due to the sudden death of King Jeongjo. It was eventually published in the form of 10 volumes and 9 books by using Jeongrija, which is a movable metal type, in September, 1801. It is confirmed that about thirty two varieties of existing editions are being kept by main domestic holding institutions and around seven other types of existing editions are being kept in foreign countries.
The Korean-character edition of Dungny Manual consists of 13 volumes and 13 books, and includes “Hwasung Castle Construction.” It is confirmed that it was made by King Jeongjo for his mother, Hegyonggung Hong, in around October, 1797. The contents of five books—vol. 40, vol. 46, vol. 47, vol. 48, and the recently discovered vol. 39—are related to the Hwasung Castle construction done in the period between January 1794 and September 1796. The distinctive feature of these Korean character materials is that most of the contents were recorded chronologically. This means it is possible to know the process of the construction of Hwasung Castle in order.
It can be understood that Volume 39 of Dungny Manual is the initial volume with a plate, and the text, which corresponds to Hwasung Castle Construction Manual, begins from Volume 40. It may have been comprised of ten volumes, because Volume 48 is the final volume. “Hwasung Castle Construction” in Dungny Manual coincides with many parts of Hwasung Castle Construction Manual, which is found only in the Chinese language. This means that a Korean-character edition of Hwasung Castle Construction Manual, which had previously been found only in Chinese characters, has been discovered. This also allows the confirmation of new records of the Hwasung Castle construction that are not included in the existing Korean annotation of Hwasung Castle Construction Manual. As a result of comparison with the existing literatures, thirty six distinctive materials have been identified and presented. Moreover, it has been found that there are many unknown valuable records that include explanations for readers dealing with the same contents included both in the Korean edition and in the Chinese edition.
