비구니 은영의 생애와 보문종 창종의 의의 (The Life of Bhikkhuni Eunyeong and the Significance of Her Establishing the Bomun Order)

초록

19세기 초반과 중반 한국사회와 한국불교계는 일련의 대변화를 겪었다. 한국 비구니공동체의 관점에서 볼 때 이러한 격변의 과정은 다양한시련을 겪어야 했던 고난의 시간이자, 동시에 그동안 한국 비구니 역사에서 한 번도 경험해 보지 못한 새로운 기회이기도 했다.
지리적으로 볼 때 탑골 보문사는 서울 중심에서 가장 가까운 비구니공동체였다.
은영과 보문사 비구니공동체는 조선왕조 말기 권력을 향유하던 세력가 집안과 일제강점기 친일권승의 횡포와 위협을 받고 공동체 자체가궤멸될 뻔한 큰 위기들을 수차례 겪었으나 민주적인 의사 결정 방식과 은영의 결단력 있고 미래지향적인 리더십 덕분에 위기를 기회로 삼아누구보다 앞서 현대적 승가공동체의 모델을 만들었다. 뿐만 아니라 이들의 손에 의해 그동안 남성출가자 공동체에서만 운영되었던 강원과선원을 비구니만을 위해 개설하고 사찰경제에 도움이 될 수 있는 범패교육 프로그램을 운영하였으며, 이를 자신들의 공동체뿐 아니라 전국의비구니공동체 일원에게 개방하였다. 건축에 있어서도 당시로서는 불교계는 물론 사회 전체에서 앞서가는 건축물을 세워 혁신을 주도하였다.
또한 비구니들만을 위한 비구니종단을 세계 최초로 창종하여 여성출가자의 정체성 확립과 미래 방향을 제시하였다.
그러나 은영의 입적 후 보문종의 활동은 점차 줄어들기 시작하였다.
보문종 창종 취지는 오늘날의 시각에서 살펴본다 해도 전혀 손색이 없을 만큼 훌륭하다. 이제 다시 초심으로 돌아가 재도약하여 지속해서발전해 나갈 수 있는 공동체를 운영하기 위해서 노력해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In the early and mid-19th century, Korean society and the Korean Buddhist community experienced a series of great changes. From the perspective of the Korean nun community, this period of change was a time of hardship beset by various trials, but at the same time, it also posed an unprecedented opportunity for them in the history of Korean bhikkhunis.
Geographically, Bomunsa Temple in Tapgol Valley was the bhikkhuni community closest to the center of Seoul. Bomunsa Temple's nun community and its founder Eunyeong experienced several major crises that nearly destroyed the community due to the tyranny and threats of two groups: influential families who enjoyed power at the end of the Joseon Dynasty and pro-Japanese monks and nuns who wielded power during the Japanese colonial period. However, thanks to Eunyeong's adoption of a democratic decision making process and decisive, for-ward-looking leadership, these crises became opportunities to create a new model for a modern monastic community ahead of anyone else.
In addition, Bomunsa's nun community established both a gangwon (scriptural study center) and a seonwon (Seon meditation center) exclusively for bhikkhunis— previously operated only for the bhikkhu community — and began operating a Buddhist education program to teach beompae (verses sung in praise of the Buddha and his teachings) that could be helpful to the temple's economy. These educational programs were provided not only to their own community but also to members of other nun communities across the country. In architecture, Eunyeong led innovation by designing buildings that were ahead of their time not only in the Buddhist community but also in society in general. In addition, she established the world's first bhikkhuni order exclusively for nuns ("Bomunjong"), formally establishing the status of female monks and presenting a future direction.
However, after Eunyeong passed away, the activities of the Bomun Order gradually began to decline. The purpose of founding the Bomun Order was praise-worthy even from today's perspective. Now they must go back to the beginning with the mindset of a novice and make efforts to leap forward and establish a revitalized community that can continue to develop.
