올드미디어는 뉴미디어를 어떻게 재현하는가? 텔레비전과 인터넷 관련 신문 보도를 중심으로 (A Study on discourse of new media represented by old media Focusing on newspaper articles about TV and Internet)

초록

새로운 매체의 등장은 기존 매체의 위상에 많은 영향을 끼치게 되어 미디어 장 내에서는 제한된 영역을 차지하고자 하는 권력투쟁이 발생하게 된다. 본 연구는 이러한 미디어 상호간의 권력관계, 특히 담론생산의 주도적 위치를 차지하는 올드미디어로서의 신문이 텔레비전, 인터넷 등의 시대별 뉴미디어와 관련해 생산하는 담론을 분석하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 신문은 뉴미디어에 대해 교육적․공익적 역할의 충족 여부를 평가하고 그에 따라 긍정적 혹은 부정적으로 보도하는 경향이 있으며 그 보도방식은 사실보다는 가설에 기반하는 양상을 보였다. 텔레비전에 대한 담론의 경우 전반적으로 ‘저속할’ 뿐만 아니라 ‘공공성이 결여된’ 매체로 재현하고 있으며, 인터넷에 대해서는 도입기에 긍정적 담론이 다수 발견되었으나 성숙기로 갈수록 ‘선정적’이면서 ‘중독성’이 강하고 ‘병리적 치료가 필요한’ 매체로 재현되고 있었다. 둘째, 신문은 새롭게 등장하는 뉴미디어를 ‘타 국가와의 경쟁도구’로 담론화하는데, 이 과정에서 외국의 뉴미디어 관련기술과 문화에 대한 이중적 보도양상을 나타냈다. 즉, 기술적 측면에서 뉴미디어가 선진국의 앞선 수준에 도달해야 함을 강조하면서도 내용적 측면에서는 뉴미디어로 인해 파생되는 외국 문화에 대해 부정적 시각을 견지하거나, 기술적으로는 발전했을지라도 대안 미디어로서의 기능에 관한 담론은 축소되어 있었다. 셋째, 신문은 뉴미디어의 등장으로 야기되는 사회적 문제에 대한 해결책으로 ‘가족(부모)의 관심과 대화’와 ‘인쇄매체의 활용’ 등을 제시하고 있다. 이러한 시각은 신문매체가 뉴미디어를 이성적 판단이 부족한 미성년자들의 전유물로 바라본다는 관점에서 비롯되는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 마지막으로 신문이 텔레비전과 인터넷을 비윤리적이고 수준 낮은 미디어로 재현하는 것에 반해 신문 스스로에 대해서는 매우 ‘엘리트적’이며 사회를 선도하는 ‘정통성’ 있는 미디어라는 담론을 반복적으로 생산하는 경향을 나타냈다. 이러한 결과는 올드미디어로서의 신문이 이항대립적 위치라는 특수한 입장에서 타 미디어를 특정하게 담론화함으로써 미디어 장에서의 우월성을 확보하고자 하는 담론생산 행위로 해석할 수 있다.

영어초록

Advent of new media influences on the status of existing media. When new media enters into the existing field of media, a power struggle for leading position erupts among media. During this struggle, old media makes use of its leading position in discourse producing to fix new media in a specific frame. This research analyzed newspaper articles on new media, which are television and internet, to see how this struggle goes and the mechanism of power works on the basis of the stage of media life cycle. The results are followed: first, newspaper tended to judge how well the new media performs its educational and public duty as a popular media and then decide the way of indicating new media, positive or negative. According to discourse regarding new media in newspaper, television was indicated as a medium that is ‘low’ and ‘lack of publicness’. A few of positive discourses were found in the introduction stage of internet, but when it comes to maturity stage, internet began to be indicated as ‘lascivious’ and ‘addictive’ medium that needed treatment to be cured which eventually defined the medium as a pathological phenomenon. Second, newspaper produced certain discourses that define new media as a ‘mean to compete against other countries’. Also newspaper took contradictory attitude since it admitted that new media brought advanced technology which is essential for competition against other countries and that is good, but on the other hand, it consistently maintained negative view on foreign cultures that inevitably flowed into the country. Third, to solve the socio-cultural problems caused by new media, newspaper suggested to make use of ‘conversation with family’ and ‘reading print media’. This is not just about the conservative attitude of newspapers which had been spreading the value of traditional family, but also shows that newspaper regards new media as teenagers’ sole property who are not fully matured. Lastly, while newspaper has defined television and internet as mass media or populistic media all along, it placed itself in the opposite side of new media defying itself as ‘elite’ and ‘authentic’ medium that leads the society in right way.
