상키야 사상에 대한 라마누자의 비판 (Rāmānuja's Criticism of Sāṃkhya Philosophy)

초록

본 논문은 『슈리바쉬야』(Śrībhāṣya)에 나타난 라마누자(Rāmānuja)의 상키야 비판을 고찰한다. 전통적으로 인도사상에서 비판은 자설(自說)을 정립하는 과정에서 필수적으로 요청되는 과정이었다. 라마누자가 자설을 세우는 과정에서 필연적으로 짚고 넘어가야 할 이론은 크게 보아 샹까라의 환영설과 상키야의 전변설이라 해도 무방하다. 이 두 이론은 라마누자의 전변설과 유사하면서도 또한 서로 다른 대표적인 이론들이다. 샹까라의 환영설에 대한 비판의 요점은 세계의 실재성에 대한 입장의 상위를 드러내는데 있다. 이에 비하여 상키야에 대한 비판은 전변(轉變)의 궁극적인 원인에 대한 입장의 상위를 드러내는 것을 초점으로 한다.
라마누자가 상키야에 대한 비판을 통하여 드러내고자 하는 것은 상키야의 전변설과는 다른 자설의 정체성이며 따라서 '서로 다름'이 강조되고 있지만, 본 논문에서는 이 두 이론이 지니는 유사성도 동시에 검토해보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 아래의 3가지 점에 주목하여 이 두 이론을 비교 검토한다. 1) 브라흐만의 양극성(polarity)과 이원론, 2) 라마누자의 3중 실재(tattvatraya)와 상키야의 25요소, 3) 해탈된 아뜨만의 개별성과 뿌루샤의 다수성. 상키야에 대한 라마누자의 비판에도 불구하고 상키야와 라마누자의 한정불이론 사이에는 상당한 유사성이 보인다.

Criticism of other viewpoints is as necessary as exposition of one's own viewpoint. A philosopher cannot be content with the bare exposition of his standpoint. He must not only be familiar with the views of others but must also be in a position to point out the shortcomings and defects, if any, in them. Further, it is also necessary for one to take note of the evaluation of one's position in the light of the objections raised by them.
Rāmānuja is at his best not only when he elucidates the Viśiṣṭādvaita position, but also when he examines and criticizes the views of others. I propose to consider in this paper the manner in which Rāmānuja in his Śrībhāṣya criticizes the Sāṃkhya philosophy.
Sāṃkhya philosophy as described by Īśvarakṛṣna is dualistic and non-theistic in outlook and affirms satkāryavāda (the doctrine of the pre-existence of the effect). According to Sāṃkhya, the effect pre-exists in its material cause. The effect is the essence of its material cause and as such identical with it. In Sāṃkhya, the material cause of the universe is the unconscious prakṛti which is wholly independent of another spiritual principle, i.e. Puruṣa. The transcendent nearness (sannidhānam) of the intelligent puruṣa is sufficient to move prakṛti to act, although it remains unmoved.
The principal objection to the Sāṃkhya raised by Rāmānuja is directed against the possibility of the evolution of prakṛti. According to Rāmānuja, the process of evolution could not have been started by non-intelligent prakṛti on its own accord because a non-intelligent entity cannot evolve itself in such a perfect order without being regulated by an intelligent agent. Another point criticized by Ramanuja is as to the possibility of the mere transcendent nearness (sannidhānam) of Puruṣa, which causes the initial disturbance (udreka) to the equilibrium in prakṛti for creation to take place.
In spite of Ramanuja's criticism of Samkhya, there are some important similarities between the two. Therefore, I also inquire into these similarities minutely centering on the follow three points; 1) polarity of Brahman and dualism, 2) tattva-traya and 25 tattvas, and 3) individuality of emancipated ātman and plurality of puruṣa.
