동양철학에서 본 腦와 心의 상관성 (Correlation between brain and heart in Eastern philosophy)

초록

이 논문은 동양철학의 입장에서 뇌(腦)와 심(心)의 상관성을 고찰한 것이다.
이 논문에서는 뇌(腦)와 사(思)의 의미, 심(心)과 신(囟)의 결합방식과 신명(神明)의 역할을 서술하면서 동양에서 뇌와 심의 상관성에 대해 살펴보았다. 논의한 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 동양의 전통에서 도교 방면의 관심을 제외하면 유교 자체에서는 뇌(腦)에 대한 전문적인 논의가 거의 없었다. 따라서 뇌와 심의 관계에 대한 규명도 없었다.
둘째, 뇌와 심의 문제에 대해서 비교적 관심을 보인 쪽은 도교 쪽이었고, 아울러 중국 전통의학 방면이었다. 전통 한의학에서는 ‘뇌 중심=뇌주(腦主)’냐 ‘마음(심장) 중심=심주(心主)’냐는 논란이 있었는데, 그 내용은 뇌와 심이 무엇이고 그 둘의 관계가 어떠한가의 문제였다.
동양은 뇌 중심의 사고가 아니라 심 중심의 사고가 중심이며 이를 확대, 발전해 가는 과정에서 뇌를 발견하고 그것을 심의 기능의 일부로서 포섭하였다고 생각된다. 심장을 방촌으로 보고 그것을 심으로 여긴 것은 예컨대 도교에서 하복부(장)가 뇌와 연결된 ‘복뇌(復腦, Gut Brain)’의 원초적인 심 반응에 주목하고 그것을 문자에 반영하였다 판단된다. 대뇌보다도 먼저 정보를 인지하는 이른바 동물적 감각, 직관 같은 복뇌라는 의미의 심에서 확대되어 두부의 뇌의 발견으로 향하였다고 본다. 여기서 동양은 심 중심의 주정주의(主情主義)가 주류이고 뇌 중심의 주지주의는 아니었음을 살필 수 있다.
셋째, 뇌(腦)와 사(思)의 의미에서는 심과 뇌는 서로 연결되어 있다는 사실을 확인하였고, 생각뿐만 아니라 감각, 지각의 활동이 심과 뇌의 연동에 의한 것임을 살필 수 있었다. 생각할 ‘사(思)’ 자에서 이해할 수 있는 심과 뇌의 결합은 동양철학의 사유 일반에 깊이 침투되어 확산되고 있음을 볼 수 있었다.
‘사’ 자를 논의하며 ‘뇌가 중심이 되어 심을 컨트롤하는’ 경우, ‘심이 중심이 되고 뇌가 부수적으로 작동하는’ 경우를 구별하고, 전자는 위(뇌)에서 아래(심)로 향하는 인과적 메커니즘(=하향적)으로, 후자는 아래(심)에서 위(뇌)로 향하는 인과적 메커니즘(=상향적)으로 기술하였다. 전자는 뇌주설이고 후자는 심주설이라 보았다. 그러나 심주설과 뇌주설에서 그 중심은 심주설이었음을 살필 수 있었다.
넷째, 신, 신명은 흔히 우리가 만물의 영장(靈長)이라고 할 경우의 탁월한 인식 능력이나 지성을 포함한 정신활동을 말한다. 신명은 심이든 뇌에든 모두 들어있다고 하지만 그것은 심, 뇌 그 활동의 탁월함을 강조한 것으로 보이며 결국 신명은 순자가 말한대로 마음이 주관하는 것이었다. 따라서 심은 뇌를 포섭하고, 심지어 신명까지도 주관하는 위치를 확정한다. 이렇게 해서 서양의 뇌 과학적 지식이 확산되기 이전까지 동양적 전통에서는 뇌가 본격적으로 다루어지지 않았지만 심의 논의 내에서 뇌의 이해가 심화, 확대되고 있었음을 살필 수 있었다. 다시 말해서 마음의 활동이 바로 뇌의 활동이라는 말이 된다. 아울러 이것은 몸과 마음 속에 뇌가 숨어(체화돼) 있다는 것을 뜻한다.

영어초록

This thesis is a basic study of the correlation between the brain and mind in Eastern philosophy.
First of all, the meaning of the Chinese character Brain(腦) and Sa(思, thinking) was reviewed. In addition, And how the heart/mind[心] and brain[腦] are combined, and what the role of Shinmyeong(神明, mental activity) is among them is described.
The contents described in this paper are summarized as follows; First, in the Eastern tradition, except for the interest in Taoism, there was little professional discussion about the brain in Confucianism itself. Therefore, there was no identification of the relationship between the brain and the mind.
Second, it was the Taoist side who showed relatively interest in the problem of the brain and mind, as well as the traditional Chinese medicine side.
In traditional oriental medicine, there has been a debate about whether it is brain-centered or mind-centered. It is a matter of what the brain and the heart are, and what is the relationship between the two.
In the East, mind-centered thinking is the center, not brain-centered thinking. It is thought that he discovered the brain in the process of expanding and developing it, and embraced it as part of the function of the mind. For example, in Taoism, it is judged that the lower abdomen, or intestines, paid attention to the primitive response of the Gut Brain, which is connected to the brain, and reflected it in the mind. It is believed that it has expanded from the heart in the sense of the so-called animal sense, the ventral brain like intuition, which recognizes information before the cerebrum, and headed for the discovery of the brain. Here, in the Orient, it was possible to see that mind-centered emotionalism was the mainstream, and brain-centered intellectualism was not.
Third, in terms of the brain and the mind, it can be confirmed that the mind and brain are connected to each other. It was found that the activities of thought, sense, and perception are due to the response of the mind and brain. It can be seen that the combination of mind and brain, which can be understood from the character ‘sa’, is deeply infiltrating and spreading in general thoughts of Eastern philosophy.
Fourth, Shinmyeong name refers to mental activity including excellent cognitive ability or intellect when we say that it is the lord of all things. It is said that the Shinmyeong is contained in both the mind and the brain. However, it seems to have emphasized the excellence of the mind and brain activity. As Xunzi said, Shinmyeong was governed by the mind. Therefore, the mind subsumes the brain and even determines the position of governing the Shinmyeong. In this way, it was possible to see that the understanding of the brain was deepening and expanding within the discussion of the mind, although the brain was not dealt with in earnest in the oriental tradition before the Western brain scientific knowledge was spread. In other words, the activity of the mind is the activity of the brain.
