초록

현대사회는 광의의 산업사회이지만, 후기 산업사회이며 정보사회이다. 장구한 세월 동안 한국사회는 농경생활을 근간으로 한 농촌사회였고, 자연히 민속은 대부분 농촌사회에 기능적이었던 생활관습이었다. 농촌 산업화는 기본적으로 농업을 분업화, 전문화, 상품화하는 과정이다. 이에 따라 자신들의 먹거리를 생산하던 생계농업(subsistence agriculture)은, 시장에서 판매할 상품을 생산하는 산업농(industrial agriculture)으로 바뀌었다. 생계농업에 기초하여 운영되던 노동조직, 마을사회, 농경의례, 마을신앙, 농민예술도 적지 않게 변화되었다. 하지만 이런 와중에서도 마을공동체 민속의 관성이 남아서 일정 기간 옛 방식과 유사하게 전승되는 민속도 있다. 마을공동체 민속 가운데 어떤 것은 산업농 체제가 성립된 후 그에맞게 재편되어 적응하고 있다.
산업농 체제 등장 이후 마을공동체 민속의 가장 두드러진 변화는 해당 민속과 관련이 없었던 사람들로 전승주체가 바뀌는 것이다. 마을단위 민속의 전승주체는 마을 밖의 지역 사람, 나아가 지역 출신이 아닌 사람들까지 참여하여 재구성되고 있다. 전승주체가 마을을 초월하여 재구성되는 현상은 현대 산업사회 민속을 이해하는 데 매우 중요하다. 이들 새로운전승주체는 자발적인 판단과 선택에 따라 민속을 전승하는 데 참여하고 있다. 그들은 전통문화에 관한 정책적․제도적 변화를 고려하고 수용하되, 마을공동체 민속을 전통문화로 규정하면서 이를 지키고 가꾸고 이어가야 할 대상으로 인식한다. 그 결과 단절되거나 쇠퇴하는 민속을 탈맥락적으로 재현 또는 이식하거나 자기 삶의 일부로 편입시키고 있다. 또한 남성주도의 마을공동체 민속에도 농촌 산업화 이후 여성들의 참여가 활발하게 이루어기도 한다.
남성 본위의 민속이 여성에게도 개방되는 현상이다. 이것이 산업사회에서 마을공동체 민속의 전승과 복원, 재활성화의 경향이다.

영어초록

Contemporary society is industrial society in a broad sense but is also referred to as later industrial society and information society. For such a long period, Korean society was agricultural society grounded on farming. Naturally, most of our folklore was associated with custom that was functional in farming society. Rural and agricultural industrialization is basically a process ofsubdividing, specializing, and commercializing farming. Accordingly, subsistence agriculture oriented to producing what they had to eat themselves was changed to industrial agriculture intended to produce farm products to be sold in the market. Also, labor organizations, village communities, farming rituals, village beliefs, or farmers’ art of which operation was grounded onsubsistence agriculture changed quite a lot, too. In the meantime, due to the inertia of folklore in village communities, some of it is transmitted for a certain period in the similar way as before. Some of the village community folklore have been restructured and adapted accordingly after the establishment of the industrial agriculture system.
The most noticeable change appearing in the folklore of village communities after the emergence of the industrial agriculture system is that those transmitting the folklore are becoming people who are not really associated with that. Village-unit folklore transmitting subjects are being reorganized with those outside the village or even not from the region participating in it. Thephenomenon that transmission subjects are becoming reorganized beyond the village is very important to understand folklore in this industrial society. These new transmission subjects are joining in transmitting folklore while following their own judgment or choice. They consider and accept political as well as institutional changes in traditional culture while they regard it is something thathas to be preserved and transmitted defining village community folklore as traditional culture. As a result, they either reproduce or transplant discontinued or declining folklore in decontexturalized aspects or transfer it into their own lives. Moreover, in men-oriented community folklore, too, after the emergence of rural industrialization, women have been participating actively as well. Thisis a phenomenon that men-led folklore has opened to women, too. This is the tendency of the transmission, restoration and revitalization of village community folklore in industrial society.
