농어촌 다문화가정 유아와 일반가정 유아의 언어 및 인지발달에 관한 연구 (Language and cognitive development of preschool children from multicultural families and mono-Korean families in rural areas)

초록

본 연구는 농어촌 다문화가정 유아의 언어 및 인지발달 특징에 대한 파악을 목적으로 실시되었으며 농어촌 지역에 거주하는 183명의 다문화가정 유아와 180명의 일반가정 유아(N=363)의 언어 및 인지발달 정도가 비교 분석되었다. 이에 따른 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화가정 유아의 언어발달 정도가 일반가정 유아보다 유의미하게 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 인지발달검사 결과, ‘인지처리과정’에 대한 두 집단 간 유의미한 차이는 보고되지 않았으나 ‘습득도’에서는 다문화가정 유아가 일반가정 유아보다 유의미하게 낮은 점수를 보였다. 집단 간 차이가 없는 것으로 보고 된 ‘인지처리과정’을 하위영역별로 살펴보면, 동시처리에 대한 두 집단 간 차이는 보고되지 않았으나 순차처리에서는 다문화가정 유아가 일반가정유아 보다 유의미하게 낮은 점수를 보였다. 이와 더불어 비언어적 인지발달 정도를 비교한 결과, 동시처리에 속하는 비언어성 소검사에서는 두 집단 간 차이가 없었으나, 순차처리에 속하는 소검사에서는 다문화가정 유아가 일반가정 유아보다 유의미하게 낮은 점수를 나타냈다. 셋째, 다문화가정 유아의 언어와 비언어적 인지발달 간의 관계를 분석한 결과, 유의미한 정적상관이 보고되었다. 넷째, 다문화가정 유아의 언어발달 수준에 따른 비언어적 인지발달 정도를 비교한 결과, 언어발달수준이 낮은 집단이 높은 집단에 비해 유의미하게 낮은 비언어성 인지발달 점수를 나타냈다. 연구결과를 기초로 농어촌 다문화가정 유아의 언어 및 인지발달을 촉진하기 위한 중재의 필요성이 논의되었다.

영어초록

‘Support for Multicultural Families Act’ (2008) in Korea defines a multicultural family as consisting of a native Korean and his or her immigrant spouse. This study, undertaken to discover and implement the kind of support services mandated by the act, was designed to assess language and cognitive development with 183 children from multicultural families (MC group) and a comparison group of 180 children from mono-Korean families (MK group) in rural areas. A summary of the main results reveals that the MC group scored significantly lower in language development and acquired knowledge (achievement score of K-ABC) than the MK group did, whereas there was no difference on the overall mental processing composite score (simultaneous processing + sequential processing) of K-ABC between the two groups. Although there was no difference on the mental processing composite score between the two groups, the results of its factors were different: there was no difference in simultaneous processing between the two groups, while the MC group showed significantly lower scores of sequential processing than the MK group did. Furthermore, non-verbal scales of simultaneous (face cognition, triangles, matrix analogies, spatial memory, and photo series) and sequential (hand movement) processing were compared between the two groups: the MC group showed no difference in all non-verbal scales of simultaneous processing from the MK group, but scored significantly lower on the non-verbal scale of sequential processing, compared to the MK group. Additionally, for the MC group, the total language score and all the non-verbal scales of K-ABC showed significantly positive correlations. Finally, the MC group with relatively low level of language development scored significantly lower on non-verbal cognitive development than the MC group with relatively high level of language development, except triangle and photo series. These findings were scrutinized in terms of cause, and then suggested the necessity for intervention programs to prevent potential developmental delays for preschool children from multicultural families revealed in the research.
