이문화 간 소통과 갈등 해결의 방법론적 탐구 : 금남 최부(錦南 崔溥)의 표해록(漂海錄) 분석을 중심으로 (Strategies for Intercultural Communication and Conflict Resolution in East Asia :An Analysis of Geumnam Choi Bu’s Pyohae-rok)

초록

이 글에서는 최부의 생환 직후 그가 직접 찬술하여 바친 ｢중조문견일기(中朝聞見日記)｣의 유희춘 간행본을 바탕으로 그의 발화와 행동의 양상을 분석하면서, 이질적이고 상호 투쟁적인 감성의 중첩 양상이 어떠한 소통의 자질 내지 전략의 적용을 통해 생존의 ‘공감장(共感場)’으로 변용될 수 있었는지 탐구하였다. 이 과정에서 특히 최부의 표류 여정 속 생존의 방책으로 동아시아의 인도적 구조 정책과 더불어 난민의 행로에서 일행 안팎을 향해 발휘된 소통과 갈등 해소의 전략을 주목하여 살펴보았다. 이것은 인간의 생존에 필요한 최소한의 조건이 유실되고 관념적 질서가 무너진 갈등의 상황, 그리고 그러함에도 불구하고 교섭을 지속해야 하는 폐쇄적 공간의 공재(共在) 현장에서 어떠한 소통의 기술 및 갈등 해소의 전략이 사용될 수 있을지 예증하는 과정이었다. 금남 최부의 표해록에 드러난 대화‧행위‧상황 등의 의미를 분석하며 이문화 간 쟁투의 감성 체계가 생존이라는 목표와 보편적 인간성을 공유하는 밀착적 관계로 재구성되는 흐름을 추적하는 것이 이 글의 주안점이었다.
분석의 경과로부터, 최부는 강렬한 원망과 잠재된 르상티망의 분출 공간이 될 수 있었던 표류선 안에서 계층 권력에 의한 통제를 발휘하려 하기보다 합리적 판단을 유도하는 지성의 발휘와 ‘인의(仁義)’의 실천으로 갈등의 구조를 변용하였음을 확인하였다. 또한 표착 이후 접경과 육로의 노정에서 특히 최부가 이문화 간 관계 맺기에 보인 두드러진 소통의 전략은 정명(正名)과 덕치(德治)의 균형된 실현이었으며, 이 양상들은 그 발현 과정에 드러난 일관성 혹은 항상성을 볼 때 사실 행위 주체인 최부의 선택적 전략이 아닌 체화된 예법이자 군자의 평상심이 드러난
자연적 결과였음을 간취하였다. 이처럼 표해록의 기록에 드러난 최부의 이문화 간 소통 전략은 15세기 조선의 군자 상을 핍진하게 추체험하도록 할 뿐 아니라, 혼종성과 탈경계적 운동성으로 점철된 오늘날 의미심장한 성찰과 사상적 차용의 계기를 마련해준다. 이 글은 고전이자 사실적 기록물인 표해록에 담긴 최부의 발화를 이문화 소통론 탐구의 측면에서 분석한 사례로, 최부 연구의 저변을 더욱 확장하게 될 것이다.

영어초록

Emotion is a strong motivation that catalyzes behaviors, subsequently compelling an individual to interact, and the cognitive changes that accompany it. The process that causes an entity’s transformation structures each life in a colorful way, and as a result, a competitive narrative of individuals and groups is created. In this article, based on the published version of “Jungjomun Gyeonilgi”(中朝聞見日記), written and presented by Choi Bu right after he came back to life, I analyzed the aspects of Choi Bu’s speech and behavior, and explored how the overlapping aspects of heterogeneous and mutually conflicting emotions could be transformed into a “field of empathy” for survival through applying certain skills or strategies of communication. To this end, I paid particular attention to East Asia’s humanitarian rescue policy as a survival measure during Choi Bu’s drifting journey, as well as the strategies of communication and conflict resolution that he demonstrated toward those both inside and outside his party during his refugee journey.
This was a process of demonstrating what kinds of communication skills and conflict resolution strategies can be used during conflict, where the most minimum conditions necessary for human survival have been lost and the ideological order has collapsed—and, moreover, in a closed space where negotiations must continue despite such circumstances. This article’s main intent was to analyze the meaning of the conversations, actions, and situations reported in Geumnam Choi Bu’s Pyohae-rok and to trace the flow of the emotional system of intercultural struggle being reconstructed into an intimate relationship that shares the goal of survival and universal humanity. In this study, it was confirmed that Choi Bu transformed the conflict’s structure by exercising his intellect to induce rational judgment and practicing “benevolence” rather than trying to exert control by means of relying on hierarchical power on the drifting ship, which could have been a space where intense resentment and latent ressentiment could have erupted. In addition, the prominent communication strategy that Choi Bu displayed in establishing intercultural relations while travelling along the border and land routes was the balanced realization of rectifying names and governing with virtue. When we look at the consistency or homeostasis revealed in the process of their manifestation, we can see that it was not a selective strategy of Choi Bu, the actual actor, but actually an embodied etiquette and a natural result of the gentleman’s calm mind.
Starting from a strong academic standard, but also embracing the subject with a soft sensibility that expresses compassion and reciprocity and forming a magnetic field of communication, practicing benevolence and virtue was truly the characteristic of a gentleman that Joseon Confucian scholars tirelessly practiced and embodied. In this way, Choi Bu’s cross-cultural communication strategy revealed in the records of Pyohae-rok not only allows us to vividly relive the image of a gentleman in 15th-century Joseon, but also provides an opportunity for meaningful reflection and philosophical borrowing in today’s world, which is marked by hybridity and transcending movement. This article analyzes Choi Bu’s utterances contained in Pyohae-rok, a classic and factual record, from the perspective of exploring cross-cultural communication theory, and will expand the foundation of Choi Bu’s research. Simultaneously, in today’s world where global border crossing is becoming increasingly hybridized due to the advancement and utilization of digital media, we contend that we will discover what East Asia’s long-standing promise has been when encountering an unfamiliar “other” and thus gain a reference point for peaceful coexistence and coevolution.
