노상추일기로 본 조선후기 군호(軍號)에 담긴 생활상 연구 (A Study on the Lifestyle Reflected in the Military Passwords of the Late Joseon Dynasty: Viewed from the Diary of Noh Sang-chu)

초록

본고는 조선후기 군호 작명과 생활상의 관련성을 고찰하기 위해 법전을 중심으로 조선시대 궁성 방위와 야금 순찰에 활용된 군호의 시달 체계를 살펴보고, 조선후기 무관인 노상추의 일기에 기록된 군호를 분석해 보았다.
먼저, 조선시대 순작(巡綽)은 개국 초부터 시행되었고 경국대전에도 군호에 대한 언급이 나타난다. 군호 조목은 속대전에 이르러 추가되어 담당관, 제출시간, 기밀 누설 시 형별, 교외 거둥 시 재가 방법 등이 수록되었다. 특히 군호보고와 전달은 궁성문 폐쇄 시간과 관계되어 매일 신시(申時, 오후 3~5시)에 업무가 이루어졌으며, 국왕 부재에 따른 2가지 군호 재가 방식은 왕세자 책봉과 관련된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 은대조례에는 대상(大喪)을 당했을 때 전날계하한 군호를 공제(公除)까지 사용한다는 조항이 추가되었으며, 노상추일기에는 정조 국장 중 군호 계하 양상을 살필 수 있다. 이 밖에도 승정원일기를 통해 사례를 검토하여 피아식별용 암구호의 활용을 다각적으로 살펴보았다.
다음으로 노상추일기를 통해 정조~순조 연간인 1790년부터 1811년에 사용된 군호 422건을 목록화하였다. 군호는 모두 2글자 단어로 이루어졌으며, 사용 횟수에 따라 일회성 단어 234개, 2회 이상 사용된 단어는 55개로 총289개의 단어로 나타났다. 군호로 쓰인 단어는 왕실 행사, 무관 업무와 관련되며, 이 밖에도 비･눈･바람에 대한 관찰, 기우제 기간 중 강우 기원, 파종과수확, 24절기, 연월일의 순환, 자연 생태 순환 인식을 담은 물후, 탄일과 속절, 세시풍속 등과 관계된다. 따라서 각각 날씨, 농사, 월력, 기념일의 주제로 분류하여 군호에 반영된 생활상을 분석하였다.

영어초록

This study encoded articles to understand the instruction system of military passwords used for royal palace defense and night patrols in the Joseon Dynasty. Additionally, it investigateds the relationship between the naming of military passwords and lifestyle in the late Joseon Dynasty by reviewing a diary written by Noh Sang-chu, a military officer.
The practice of palace patrols commenced in the early Joseon Dynasty, and military passwords are also mentioned in Gyeonggukdaejeon (經國大典). The articles about military passwords were added to Sokdaejeon (續大典), which included information regarding the official in charge of naming, submission time, punishments for intelligence leaks, how to obtain approval, periods without a king (in the event of his outing, for example) etc. In particular, military passwords were reported to superiors and subordinates were instructed about them during Sinsi (申時, 15:00~17:00), which was related with the closing time of the palace doors. Two kinds of approval of military passwords during periods without a king were found to be associated with the investiture of crown princes. An article indicates that the military passwords sanctioned by a king a day before the royal funeral were to be used until Gongje (公除) was added to Eundaejorye (銀臺條例), and it is possible to verify how military passwords were sanctioned during the state funeral of King Jeongjo from the Diary of Noh Sang-chu.
Next, a list of 422 military passwords used during the period from King Jeongjo to King Sunjo (1790–1811) was created by referencing the Diary of Noh Sang-chu. All military passwords comprised 2 letters, and a total of 289 words could be divided by frequency of use: 234 words were used just once, while 55 words were used more than twice. The words used as military passwords were associated with royal events and military officers’ tasks as well as observations regarding rain/snow/wind, sowing and harvest, the 24 divisions of the year, the cycle of year/month/day, royal birthdays and ancestor-memorial days, seasonal customs, etc. Thus, we analyzed the lifestyle reflected in the countersigns by classifying them into several themes such as weather, farming, calendars, and anniversaries.
