싱글 아들의 노부모 돌봄 경험과 돌봄 의식 (A Study on Unmarried Males’ Experience and Perception as a Caregiver for their Elderly Parents)

초록

이 연구는 초고령사회에 진입하는 한국 사회에서 부모 돌봄의 새로운 변화 중 싱글 아들 돌봄자에 주목하고 이들의 돌봄 경험과 돌봄 의식을 중점적으로 분석했다. 초고령화와 비혼화라는 인구 변화 속에서 나타나는 싱글 아들의 노부모 돌봄을 살펴보았으며, 젠더적 관점에서 ‘여성의 일’이었던 돌봄을 남성이 어떻게 인식하고 수행하는지 확인하고자 한다. 본 연구는 싱글아들의 노부모 돌봄 수행에 대한 본질 파악이 연구목적이므로 개개인의 경험들을 수집, 분석하여 본질을 도출하는 현상학적 분석방법(Phenomenological Research Methodology)을 활용했다. 분석 결과, 5개의 본질주제로 ‘자기 성실성의 실천’, ‘사나이가 인식하는 젠더적 관점에서의돌봄’, ‘독박돌봄 수행의 어려움과 사회적 고립’, ‘부모와 자식 간의 당위성과 호혜성’, ‘부모 돌봄을 계기로 돌봄하는 ‘나’에 대한 성찰’이 도출되었다. 연구 결과를 세가지로 요약하면, 첫째, 싱글 아들 돌봄자의 돌봄 의식은 부모에 대한 자식의 도리로서 ‘효 의식’과 교환이론으로 설명되는 ‘보은 의식’이 교차하고 있다. 둘째, 싱글 아들 돌봄자는 성역할 분업의 재인식이 이루어지지만 수행적인 측면에서는 전통적 성역할에 따라 돌봄을 수행한다. 셋째, 비혼 돌봄자의 대부분은 독박 돌봄 상태에 있으며 이러한 상황은 외부적으로 소통을 기피하는 경향이 더해져서고립, 단절되기 쉽다. 본 연구는 싱글 아들 돌봄자에 주목함으로써 주돌봄자의 스펙트럼을 확장시키고, 남성의 돌봄 경험을 통해 돌봄의 탈젠더화에 대한 가능성을 제시한다.

영어초록

This study focused on single-son caregivers among the new changes in elderly care in the Korean society entering the super aging society, and focused on their caring experience and perception. This study examines the situation of caring for the elderly parents of single sons amid changes in the social structure of super aging and choosing to remain single, and attempts to confirm how men perceive and perform caring, which was a ‘woman's work’. As the main goal of this research was to study what allowed such men to continue to carry out this role, Phenomenological Research Methodology to derive the essence by collecting and analyzing individual experiences. In this study, there are five Emergent Theme "Practice of Self-integrity", "caregiving seen as a gender role by the 'Tough Guy'", "the challenge of singlecare and isolating oneself from society", "sense of duty and reciprocality amongst parents and their children", and "self-reflection resulting from caregiving" was derived. The analysis results summarized in three conclusins.
First, filial piety consciousness and exchange theory intersect in single son's care consciousness, and as the former is a dominant sentiment in Korea's society, the former precedes the latter. Second, while the male caregiver takes on a new perspective regarding sexual division of labor in their consciousness, in practice they carry out their role in the same manner as they have carried out their previous roles. Third, in the case of single male, as they are usually the sole caregiver, they easily end up shirking from communicating with not only whom they are caring for but also with the outside world, isolating themselves in the process. This study expands the spectrum of primary caregivers by focusing on single-son caregivers among them, and presents the possibility of degenderization of care through male caring experiences.
