1920-30년대 식민지 조선의 에스페란토 문학 (The Study on Esperanto Literature in Colonized Joseon in the 1920s and 1930s)

초록

이 논문은 1920-30년대 식민지 조선에서 명백한 하나의 현상이었던 에스페란토 문학의 현황과 그것이 추구했던 문학의 방향을 살폈다. 식민지 조선의 에스페란토 문학에 대해서는 연구된 바 없는데, 이는 에스페란토가 ‘외국어’가 아니라 ‘국제 공통어’이기 때문에 국가 단위의 문학 분류 체계에 끼어들 자리가 마땅치 않았기 때문이다. 한국의 에스페란토 문학은 독자들이 접하는 언어를 기준으로 1) 에스페란토로 직접 제시되는 경우, 2) 한국어-에스페란토 번역이 함께 제시되는 경우로 나누어볼 수 있다.
1) 에스페란토 문학은 번역 없이 에스페란토로만 소개되기도 하였다. 에스페란토 운동은 ‘1국가 2언어’의 이상을 강조하였는데, 에스페란토 직접 제시는 그 이상을 실현하는 상징적 행위로 여겨졌다. 어느 나라의 문학이었을 그것들이 이미 한 차례 에스페란토로의 ‘번역’을 거쳐 언어와 국적을 탈피하면서, 식민지 조선에는 ‘세계문학’이라는 형태로 전해졌다. 에스페란토 직접 제시는 언어 횡단의 비대칭성(언어들 사이의 언어 역학적, 사상적, 정치적 비대칭성)을 뛰어넘도록 만들었다. 2) 한국 문학이 에스페란토로 번역되거나, 에스페란토 문학이 한국어로 번역되기도 하였다. 하나의 자연어를 다른 자연어로 번역하는 것은, 한 민족어의 ‘판에 박은 사상과 표현’을 다른 민족어의 ‘판에 박은 사상과 표현’으로 옮기는 것이다. ‘고유의 관용 어법이 없’는 에스페란토는 ‘보편적 감정과 사상’을 그릴 수 있는 언어로 여겨졌으나, 에스페란토로의 번역을 위해 뽑힌 한국 작품들은 한국 문학의 차원에서도 이미 조선의 풍토를 반영하지는 않는 것들이었다.

영어초록

This study set out to examine the state of Esperanto literature, which was clearly a phenomenon in colonized Joseon in the 1920s and 1930s, and the literary directions it sought after. The vogue of Esperanto in colonial Joseon started with interest in literature written in the language. But there are no studies that shed light on the ways Esperanto literature was distributed and enjoyed in Korea probably because there is no suitable place for it in the literary classification system by the ethnic group and nation units since Esperanto is not a "foreign language" but a "common international language. Based on the languages that the readers were exposed to, there were three types of Esperanto literature distributed in Korea during the colonial days: 1) the type that was presented directly in Esperanto, 2) (with including the type that was presented both in Esperanto and Korean translation) the type that was presented in Korean translation.
1) Korean papers introduced Esperanto literature in full scale with no Korean translation. The Esperanto Movement highlighted the ideal of "one nation, two languages"(using the mother tongue in the nation and using Esperanto, the common language, in international exchanges). Introducing Esperanto literature in Korean papers with no Korean translation was considered as a symbolic act to fulfill the ideal. The literary works of other countries were "translated" in Esperanto and thus broke from the boundary of language and nationality, and they were delivered in the form of "world literature" to colonial Joseon. It was considered that Esperanto literature practiced the immediacy of the original work as it was, thus overcoming the translingual asymmetry or dynamic, ideological, and political asymmetry between the language to be translated and the one to translate.
2) There were cases in which Korean literature was translated in Esperanto or Esperanto literature in Korean. One of the special linguistic merits of Esperanto is "no unique idiomatic expressions." Translating a natural(ethnic) language in another natural(ethnic) language is moving from the "stereotyped ideas and expressions" of an ethnic group to those of another ethnic group. Esperanto, which is considered to reflect no such limitations of ethnic language, can depict universal emotions and ideas with no ethnic characteristics. The works of Korean literature selected to be translated in Esperanto, however, did not reflect the climate of Joseon already even in the dimension of Korean literature.
