1691년 『열성어제』 간행과 판본 연구 (A Study on the Publication Process and Editions of 『Successive Kings’ Writings (列聖御製)』Published in 1691)

초록

『열성어제(列聖御製)』는 조선시대 역대 왕의 글을 정리하여 편찬한 책이다. 열성어제 는 1631년(인조 9)부터 1865년(고종 2)까지 10차례 간행되었으며, 1691년(숙종 17) 간행본부터 체제가 확립되어 후대본에 영향을 미쳤다. 논문에서는 1691년 『열성어제』 간행의 전말이수록된 규장각 소장 『어제초등록』을 분석하고 1631년, 1679년, 1691년본 『열성어제』를 각각 연계 검토하여 1691년본『열성어제』의 간행 과정과 판본을 고찰하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다 .
첫째, 『열성어제』의 간행은 종부시가 주관하였는데, 업무에 집중할 수 있도록 종부시 제조를 『열성어제』간행 책임자인 낭선군 이우로 임명하였고, 부제조인 권유에게도 해당 임무를 부여하여 업무를 추진하게 하였다. 『열성어제』 수록 대상 어제는 사고(史庫), 중앙 및 지방 관청, 민가 소장 어제까지 폭넓게 검토하여 수집되었다. 둘째, 『열성어제』는 어제를 수집하면서 동시에 편찬이 시작되었다. 수집 어제는 초초, 중초로 정리되었는데, 정리 도중에 편찬 대상에 1631 년(인조 9) 『열성어제』와 1679년(숙종 5)에 『열성어제보유』를 통합하게 되면서 상당 시일이소요되었다. 『열성어제』의 판각과 인출은 종부시의 종학대청 등에서 진행되었고 전국에서 소집된 각수, 목수 등이 참여하였다. 간행이 종료된 후에는 오류가 확인되어 일부 내용이 다시 수정, 인쇄되었다. 『열성어제』는 위계에 따라 진상건, 진헌건, 국용건과 사고 및 관청 분상건으로 나누어 간행되었다. 셋째, 1691년 간행본은 1631년, 1679년본의 체제와 판식을 개편하였고, 전거(典據)를 추가하고 상세히 교감하는 등 내용을 보강하였다. 또한, 현존본 중에는 세자궁 진헌건, 국용건 및 내사건이 확인되었고, 판본 간의 연계 분석을 통해 내용 일부가 수정되는 양상도 확인하였다.
이 연구는 1691년본 『열성어제』의 간행 배경과 현전 판본의 서지적 특징을 종합적으로 조명하였고, 이를 통해 조선 후기 중앙 서적 간행의 출판문화사적 의미를 밝혔다.

영어초록

『Successive Kings’ writings (列聖御製)』 is a book compiled by collecting the writings of the kings of the Joseon Dynasty. The book was published ten times from 1631 to 1865, with the system established from the 1691 edition influencing later editions. This paper analyzes historical records documenting the events surrounding the 1691 publication of 『Successive Kings’ writings』, preserved in the collection of the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, and examines the analyzed content in relation to the editions from 1631, 1679, and 1691. The study reveals the following findings: First, the publication of 『Successive Kings’ writings』 was overseen by the Jongbu-si (Office of Royal Genealogy), and to ensure a focused effort, the head of the Jongbu-si, Prince Nangseon (Yi U), was appointed as the person responsible for the project. The collection range of materials for publication of 『Successive Kings’ writings』 was extensive, ranging from central government offices to private households.
Second, while collecting the writings, the compilation of the book also began. The collected writings were organized into manuscript version, and during the process, the 1631 and 1679 editions were also integrated, which caused considerable delays. The engraving and printing were carried out in the space of the Jongbu-si, with artisans such as engravers and carpenters from across the country participating. After the publication, errors were identified, and some contents were revised and reprinted. 『Successive Kings’ writings』 were published in different versions depending on the status of the intended readers.
Third, the 1691 edition revised the structure and design of the 1631 and 1679 editions, added references, and provided more detailed annotations. Among the existing copies, there are versions that were stored in the crown prince's residence, in government offices, and copies that were granted by the king to his officials.
This study comprehensively highlights the publication background of the 1691 edition of 『Successive Kings’ writings 』 and the bibliographic characteristics of the surviving copies, revealing the significance of late Joseon central publishing culture in the history of book publication.
