초록

This paper aims to make a brief historical survey on the French translations of the Bible from 1474 up to 1910. Its focus is on the historical development of these translations, giving special attention to the early stages when the so-called Lefèvre Bible and Olivétan Bible were published under the auspices of the Universities of Paris and of Louvain. At the end of the Middle Ages, French translations of the Bible were completed and made available to the world, and in 1530, the first printed French Bible was finally released through the work of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples. Recognizing the many deficiencies and problems in the Lefèvre translation, Pierre Robert Olivétan substantially improved and revised it in 1535, and this revision was later published in Leuven in 1550 as the first French Bible approved by the Catholic Church. Olivétan, a nephew of Calvin, was also highly regarded among Protestants since his revision took on the spirit of the Reformation seriously. Furthermore, his translation was carried out, making references to the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts that were available at that time. Since then, there emerged a great number of subsequent translations resulting from the abundance of interests and debates on the improvement of the translation. There were about 359 subsequent translations and revisions based on the original biblical languages produced by 1910 (a new translation or revision per year).
