초록

넷플릭스 드라마 <스위트 홈>은 자본주의적 소비와 욕망에 가득 찬 현대인들을 내세움으로써 우리가 근본적으로 회복해야 할 것이 무언인가에 대해 이야기하고 있다. 이 작품은 괴물들 사이에서의 인간의 사투를 그리고 있다. 이때 악(惡)의 존재는 다양한 괴물로 모습을 드러내는데 이는 인간변이에 기인하며, 이때 변이의 원인은 욕망으로 나타난다. 인간의 일상을 파괴하는 악의 형태는 인간 내부에 존재하는 욕망이 빚어낸 결과물이며, 욕망이 존재하는 한 악은 계속해서 탄생하기 때문에 이에 대항하는 인간은 안팎으로 끊임없이 싸워야만 하는 운명에 놓여 있다. 여기에 욕망에 대한 철학적 사유가 더해져 <스위트 홈>이란 드라마는 시청자를 인간에 대한 근원적이고도 보편적인 질문으로 이끌고 있다.
인간은 삶을 영위하기 위해 사회질서를 유지해야 하는데, 그 기본적인 단초는 개인의 도덕적 실천에 놓여 있고 이는 욕망을 다스리는 일과 연관되어 있다. 이에 대해서는 고대로부터 동서양이 공통된 생각을 보여왔다. 아리스토텔레스와 순자는 욕망을 악의 근원으로 파악하고 이를 이성적으로 제어하고 다스릴 때 비로소 인간사회가 올바름을 유지할 수 있다는 견해를 드러낸다. 그들에 의하면 인간사회는 비결정성을 특징으로 하는데, 어떻게 이성을 활용하느냐에 따라 사회는 악의 방향으로 흐를 수도 있고, 선의 방향으로 흐를 수도 있다. 그래서 인간은 조화로운 사회를 유지하며 삶을 영위하기 위해 욕망을 이겨낼 수 있는 강인한 의지를 필요로 한다. 왜냐하면 의지는 인간 행위에 동력을 제공하는 원천이 되기 때문이며, 이를 발현시키는 정도와 방향에 따라 욕망의 결과물 또한 달라지기 때문이다.
이 논문은 <스위트 홈>에 드러난 욕망과 그 윤리에 대해 논하기 위해 아리스토텔레스와 순자를 도입하려 한다. 논의의 진행은 크게 ‘욕망에 대한 통제’와 ‘악을 제어를 위한 실천’의 두 가지로 진행되며, 이는 이 시리즈물이 동서양을 포함한 보편적 공감대를 형성할 수 있었던 기본적 가치관을 구체화시킬 수 있을 것이다. 자신의 내부에 자라고 있는 악의 씨앗을 통제함과 동시에 이미 발화된 악의 형상들에 대항해야 하는 <스위트 홈> 속의 인간은 욕망에 대한 윤리적 요구와 마주함으로써 갈등과 성찰의 계기를 갖게 되고, 이는 스토리텔링을 통해 시청자에게 공유된다.
이 작품이 다양한 괴물영화에 익숙한 서양에서까지 인기를 얻은 이유는 단순히 동양적 서사의 새로움 때문만은 아니다. 동서양을 막론한 모든 인류가 공감할 수 있는 보편적 윤리의 핵심을 다루고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 과정에서 천편일률적인 서양식 좀비 혹은 괴수의 등장에 흥미를 잃은 현대의 시청자들은 인간의 본질과 윤리적 성찰의 필요성에 대해 인식하게 되는데, 이것이 바로 B급 소재를 사용했음에도 불구하고 <스트위 홈>이 새롭고 진지한 스토리텔링의 비전을 제공하는 힘이 된다.

영어초록

The Netflix drama "Sweet Home" is talking about what we need to fundamentally recover from by presenting modern people full of capitalist consumption and desire. This work is based on human struggles among monsters. In this drama, the presence of evil is manifested through various creatures, originating from human mutations, and the cause of these mutations is revealed to be desires. The forms of evil that destroy human everyday life are the products of desires within humans, and as long as desires exist, evil will continue to be born. Therefore, humans who stand against it are destined to constantly fight both internally and externally. In addition, philosophical reasoning about desires is added, leading the drama 'Sweet Home' to guide viewers towards fundamental and universal questions about humanity.
Humans must maintain social order in order to pursue life. The basic foundation lies in individual moral practice, which is related to controlling desire. This has been a common thoughts shared by both Eastern and Western societies since ancient times. Aristotle and Xunzi identify desires as the source of evil and assert that only when desires are rationally controlled and governed can human society maintain righteousness. According to them, human society is characterized by indeterminacy, and depending on how reason is employed, society can flow in the direction of evil or in the direction of goodness. Therefore, humans require a resilient will to overcome desires in order to maintain a harmonious society and pursue a fulfilling life. This is because willpower serves as the source of motivation for human actions, and the outcome of desires varies depending on the degree and direction in which it is manifested.
This paper attempts to introduce Aristotle and Xunzi to discuss the desires and ethics revealed in "Sweet Home." The discussion will proceed in two main aspects: 'control over desires' and 'practices to regulate evil.' This could embody the basic values that allowed this series to form a universal consensus, including the East and the West. The humans in "Sweet Home", who must control the seeds of evil growing within themselves while simultaneously confronting the manifested forms of evil, gain a catalyst for conflict and introspection by facing ethical demands regarding desires, and this is shared with the viewers through storytelling.
This drama has gained popularity even among western peoples who are accustomed to various monster movies. It is not just because of the unfamiliar novelty of the oriental narrative, but because it deals with the core of universal ethics that can resonate with all humanity, regardless of Eastern or Western cultures. In this process, modern viewers, who have lost interest in the stereotypical Western-style zombies or monsters, become aware of the necessity for an understanding of human nature and ethical contemplation. This is the power of "Sweet Home" that presents a vision of new and serious storytelling, despite using B-List materials.
