일본 정토종 종조 호넨(法然)의 보리심관菩提心觀 (Japanese Jodo School Founder Honen's Concept of Bodhicitta)

초록

것으로서, 자신의 성불뿐만 아니라 타자의 성불까지를 바라는 마음이다. 즉 보살의 마음이며, 사홍서원이다. 까닭에 보리심은 대승불교전반에 걸쳐, 불도 수행의 전제, 내지는 필수요소로서 여겨져 왔다.
그런데, 정토불교의 근본경전인 『무량수경』∙『관무량수경』∙『아미타경』에서는 보리심에 관한 입장이 경전마다 차이를 보인다.  『무량수경』에서는 극락왕생을 위한 필수요건으로서 보리심이 설해지고 있는데 비해, 『관무량수경』에서는 극락왕생을 위한 여러 선행 중에 하나로서 보리심이 설해지며, 『아미타경』에서는 왕생행往生行으로서 보리심은 언급되지 않고 칭명염불이 강조되고 있다.
한편, 호넨은 범부중생의 왕생행으로서 칭명염불만이 아미타불에 의해 선취選取된 것이고, 보리심은 제선행諸善行과 더불어 선사選捨된 것이라고 주장한다. 또 『무량수경』이나 『관무량수경』에서 보리심에 대해 설해진 이유는 염불의 수승함을 세우기 위한 방설傍說이며, 중생들이 얻는 이익의 측면에서도 칭명염불이 대리大利인 데 비해 보리심등의 제행은 소리小利라고 주장한다.
이처럼 호넨은 종래 일본불교에서 불도의 전제로 여겨져 왔던 보리심을 선사選捨∙방설傍說∙소리小利로 규정하고, 극락왕생을 위해 가장중요한 행인 칭명염불의 보조적 방법으로 위치시킨다. 말하자면, ‘탈보리심脫菩提心의 불교’를 주장하고 있다. 보리심을 세우지 않고도 가능한 왕생구원의 불교를 제시함으로써 일본불교의 지평을 크게 확장시켰다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

'This study is an exploration into the bodhi mind (bodhicitta) of Honen, founder of the Japanese Jodo School. The term bodhicitta began to first appear in Mahayana scriptures. It refers to an aspiration to pray not only to attain one's own buddhahood but also for others to attain it. In other words, it embodies the core concept of what a bodhisattva is and the Four Great Vows.
For this reason, bodhicitta is considered a prerequisite to or an essential element of Buddhist practice throughout Mahayana Buddhism.
In addition, each of the three major scriptures of Pure Land Buddhism — the Longer Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra, the Amitāyurdhyāna Sūtra, and the Shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra — has a different stance on the concept of bodhicitta. The Longer Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra says bodhicitta is an essential factor to be reborn in the Pure Land; the Amitāyurdhyāna Sūtra says bodhicitta is one of many good deeds one must perform to be reborn in the Pure Land; and the Shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra does not mention bodhicitta as a requirement to be reborn in the Pure Land, emphasizing instead reciting Buddha's name.
On the other hand, Honen argues that only the practice of reciting Buddha's name is accepted by Amitabha Buddha as a means for ordinary beings to be reborn in the Pure Land, and that both bodhicitta and various good deeds should be abandoned. Additionally, Honen argues that the Longer Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra and the Amitāyurdhyāna Sūtra consider bodhicitta as a secondary teaching to establish the excellence of one's practice of reciting Buddha's name, and that in terms of the benefits to sentient beings, reciting Buddha's name yields greater benefits, while other practices, including bodhicitta, reap lesser benefits.
In this way Honen encourages people to abandon bodhicitta —considered a prerequisite to the Buddhist path by Japanese Buddhists — as a secondary teaching that reaps few benefits, and he categorizes bodhicitta as an auxiliary practice to reciting Buddha's name, a practice deemed most important for rebirth in the Pure Land. In other words, Honen proposed a "Buddhism not dependent upon bodhicitta." By proposing a form of Buddhism that enables one to be reborn in the Pure Land without necessarily cultivating bodhicitta, we can say Honen expanded the horizon of Japanese Buddhism.
