<심청전>의 공감화 맥락: ‘공/사’의 경계 구분과 공생적 공공성 (The Sympathetic Context of Simcheongjeon: The Borderline of the ‘public/private’ and the Imagination of Symbiotic Publicness)

초록

<심청전>은 상상적 차원에서 개인의 불행에 대한 사회적 관심을 불러일으키고, 이에 대한 사회적 책임의 한계와 초과 영역에 대한 처리 방식을 서사화한 소설이다. 이 논문에서는 <심청전>을 대상으로 개인의 고통이 어떻게 공공의 문제가 될 수 있으며, 이웃의 불행에 대한 동정의 한계선은 무엇이고, 그것은 어떻게 결정되는가, 동정을 넘어선 차원의 ‘공생’을 위한 ‘돌봄’의 처신은 어떻게 이루어져야 하는가에 대한 한국인의 정서구조를 공감대의 차원에서 해명하고자 했다.
텍스트의 내부에 등장하는 심청의 이웃은 극빈으로 고통 받는 심청과 심봉사 가족을 관심 있게 지켜보고 따뜻하게 돌보는 ‘공생’의 태도를 지향했으며, 이는 ‘십시일반’의 공생 규약을 확정하고 있었다. 이웃은 심봉사 가족을 위해 공양미 삼백석을 마련해 주지는 못했지만, 생존 이상의 희망을 원하는 심봉사의 고통을 충분히 이해하고 공감하면서 동정의 시선을 보냈다. 그러나 ‘심봉사의 꿈’은 이웃이 도울 수 있는 한계선을 넘어선 것이었기 때문에, 심청은 인당수에 투신하는 파국을 맞이하게 된다.
그러나 <심청전>의 서사 구조는 심청을 환생시키고 왕후가 되게 함으로써, 개인의 불행에 대한 국가적 차원의 관심을 제고했다. 동시에 인간 세상을 관찰하고 상벌을 가하는 ‘수궁 세계’라는 환상적 장치를 설정함으로써, 현실 세계의 도덕적 완결성을 지향하고자 했다.
<심청전>은 개인과 사회, 사적 영역과 공적 영역, 개인/가정과 사회/국가의 허용 가능한 교섭 지점과 역할, 방식에 대한 사유를 이야기의 형태로 모색하는 동시에, 이에 대한 상상적 응답을 제안했다. <심청전>의 세계에서 딸로서의 효심과 국모로서의 은전이 명백히 구분되기 어려운 것으로 나타났으며, 감정의 공/사 경계의 불확실성은 주체의 삶의 영역과 사회적 위치에서 배태되는 정체성의 복합성에 대한 인지로 이어졌다.
심청이 효심이라는 사적 욕구 때문에 맹인 잔치라는 공적 명분을 동원한 것은 한 개인의 내면에서 공/사의 경계가 어떻게 중첩되고 착종될 수 있는가를 보여주는 사례인 동시에, 욕망과 명분, 동정과 책임이 사실은 명백히 구분될 수 없다는 심리적ㆍ사회적 공통 영역에 대한 인정구조가 형성되었음을 시사해준다.

영어초록

Simcheongjeon is one of the representative Korean classical novels which were narrated the discernable meaning of the private and the public by issuing the personal painful problem as like penury and blindness of the main character Simbongsa and pious morality of Simcheong. This paper analyzed this novel with eight versions with regard to the sympathetic context as follows; how the personal pain can be the public issue? what is the borderline of the compassion toward the suffered neighbor, and how does it come to such a decision? how should we take care of neighbor who undergo painful experience and should make symbiotic society peacefully as community members?The neighbor in the novel showed warm and sincere attitude continually to care of Simcheong's family with ordinary consideration and they oriented symbiotic life. The neighbor couldn’t resolve completely Simcheong and Simbongsa's painful and unhappy life. Blind Simbongsa hoped to be opened his eyes, and the neighbor sufficiently understand his painful situation so they showed serious consideration to Sim family and watched their lives with sympathetic attitude. The dream of Simbongsa couldn’t be realized with the neighbor’s ordinary small help, so Simcheong had to face the tragic; throwing herself into the river in a condition of getting lots of money which could be donated to the temple for realizing her father’s wish.
However the novel made the story a decisive turning point, as it were, Simcheong was given rebirth to in a dragon palace which was placed in a deep ocean and became a queen who could gain the higest public status. This story was narrated with fantastic way, but it was a result of pursuing a complete morality amongst incomplete reality.
Simcheongjeon suggested the literary imagination on the borderline of between individual and society, private sphere and public sphere, individual and family, society and nation and their intersections. In the novel, it was portrayed as impossible to discern clearly what was the piety as a daughter for the father and what was the benefit as a queen for the poor people. And also it was narrated the uncertainty of the borderline between emotional publicness and privateness and such phenomenon was linked with the recognition on the complex identities of female character Simcheong.
It is an example to explain how can overlap and confuse the publicness and the privateness in a person’s inner mind and how can the private desire link with public justification. This paper proved that it is impossible to strictly discern between compassion and responsibility, individual desire and public justification and psychological and social intersections by analysing the narrative and sympathetic context of Simcheongjeon.
