카리스마적 권위와 제도설립 그리고 확산 - 동학·천도교의 성립과 전개 과정을 중심으로 (The Establishment and Spread of Charismatic Authority and Institutions - With a Focus on the Process of Establishing and Developing Donghak and Cheondogyo)

초록

‘신의 은총으로 받은 선물’이라는 뜻으로 사용되었던 ‘카리스마’는 초기 그리스도교 공동체에서 중요한 개념으로 사용되었다. 그러나 3세기 이후 성직제도가 정착되면서, 카리스마 개념은 그리스도교 공동체 안에서 잊혀졌다. 이후 20세기 초 막스 베버(M. Weber)가 카리스마 개념을 다시 도입하면서, 카리스마는 이제 그리스도교의 울타리를 넘어 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화에서 일반화되어 사용되기 시작했다.
베버의 연구를 시작으로 카리스마 개념에 대한 정의와 활용에 대한 연구는 다양하게 시도되었다. 베버가 카리스마 개념을 사회학적 개념의 틀로 정립하였다면, 슈무엘 아이젠슈타트(S. N. Eisenstadt)와 에드워드 쉴스(E. Shils)는 베버의 카리스마 개념을 재정의하고 사회변동 과정의 요인으로 확대 적용했다. 이는 카리스마 개념이 종교가 사회를 변동시키는 요인으로서 단순히 종속변수가 아님을 보여준다.
무엇보다도 급격한 사회변동에 영향을 받고 민감하게 반응하는 ‘신종교 운동’(new religious movement)의 경우, 초기 교세를 확장시키는데 있어 창교자의 카리스마는 중요한 역할을 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 한국의 가장 대표적인 신종교인 동학·천도교 안에서 카리스마의 속성과 변용과정에 주목하였다. 구체적으로 동학·천도교가 성립되고 전개되는 과정을 베버의 카리스적 권위(Charismatic Authority)와 아이젠슈타트의 제도설립(Institution Building) 그리고 쉴스의 중심과 주변(Center and Periphery) 개념을 중심으로 살펴본다. 이로써 창교자의 카리스마는 종교가 일상화(routinization)되는 과정 안에서 사라지거나 퇴색되는 것이 아니라 제도설립을 통해 중심에서 주변으로 확산되었다는 것을 밝히는데 연구 목적이 있다.

영어초록

“Charisma”, which had originally been used with the meaning of “gifts received by God’s grace”, was employed as an important concept in the early Christian community. Since the establishment of sacerdotalism in the third century, the concept of charisma had been forgotten in Christian communities. Later in the early 20th century, the reintroduction of this concept by Max Weber initiated its generalized use in the fields of politics, economy, society, and culture beyond the border of Christianity.
Starting with Weber’s research, various studies were attempted regarding the definition and utilization of charisma. Weber may have established the concept of charisma as a conceptual framework of sociology, whereas Shmuel N. Eisenstadt and Edward Shils redefined this concept and extended its application as a factor influencing the process of social change. This shows that the concept of charisma is a factor by which religions change society, not merely a dependent variable.
Above all, for “new religious movements” that are influenced by and sensitively respond to radical social change, the charisma of religious founders plays an important role in expanding congregation in the early stages. Therefore, the present study was focused on the attributes of charisma and the process of its transformation in Donghak and Cheondogyo, which are the most representative new religions formed in South Korea. In specific, the establishment and development of Donghak and Cheondogyo were examined with a focus on the concepts of Weber’s charismatic authority, Eisenstadt’s institution building, and Shils’s center and periphery. In doing so, the study aimed to verify that the charisma of religious founders did not disappear or fade during the routinization of religions, but was rather spread from the center to the periphery through the establishment of institutions.
