거문고의 악도(樂道) (Musical Logos of Geomungo)

초록

거문고는 조선시대 사대부 계층의 교양 필수 악기였다. 물론 그것은 오락이나 음악으로서 목적도 있었지만, 궁극적인 목적은 심신 수양이었다. 그래서 거문고를 잘 탈 수 있는 능력은 기예가 아니라 인품이라고 했다.
거문고는 고구려 시대에 중국의 금(琴)을 참고하여 제작된 악기였는데, 그 후 통일 신라, 고려, 조선시대를 거치면서 가장 한국적인 악기로 토착화되었고, 지금도 중요한 전통 국악기 중의 하나가 되었다.
거문고는 음악의 미적 · 예술적인 면보다는 사상적인 면에 더 초점을 맞춘 악기이기 때문에 음향학적으로도 그렇게 설계되고 제작되었다. 거문고의 가장 핵심이 되는 사상은 유가(儒家) 사상으로서, 그것은 한 마디로 유음(遺音)을 통한 덕음(德音)의 실현이라고 할 수 있다. 거문고는 정악(正樂)이라는 음악 형태로 활용되었기 때문에 발현(撥絃)의 방식으로 연주되며, 음역이 낮고, 느리며 가락에 꾸밈이 적다.
거문고 음악이 근세에 이르러서는 민간 계층에게까지 폭 넓게 수용되면서 거문고 산조 음악이 탄생된다. 산조는 한국의 전통 샤머니즘이 적극적으로 반영된 음악이다. 이러한 산조는 음악적인 애(哀)를 통한 속된 마음의 정화를 추구하기 때문에 애잔한 계면조(界面調) 가락이 중심이 된다. 뿐만 아니라 거문고 음악에는 희성(希聲)을 추구하는 도가(道家) 사상의 특징도 들어있다.
오늘날 우리 음악계는 서양음악이 주류를 이루고 있다. 그러나 서양음악은 바로크 시대 이후 지나칠 정도로 기법과 기능 중심의 음악으로 치달았기 때문에 그것은 인격 수양을 위한 음악이 아니라 음악 기법을 위한 음악이 되었고, 그 결과 서양의 현대 클래식 음악은 대중들의 정서에서 점점 더 멀어지게 되었다. 하지만, 우리는 음악의 서구화가 곧 음악의 선진화라는 오리엔탈리즘적인 음악 사상에서 여전히 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 그래서 우리의 이러한 서구 편향적인 음악 상황에서 거문고가 갖는 의미는 참으로 크다. 오늘날 한국 음악계가 안고 있는 많은 문제점들을 해결하는 데 하나의 중요한 단서를 거문고의 사상과 음악을 통해 찾을 수 있을 것으로 보고, 본고에서는 거문고의 악도를 중심으로 새로운 길을 모색해보고자 한다.

영어초록

Geomungo was the essential refinement musical instrument of the nobility class in Joseon Dynasty. The purpose of geomungo was entertainment or music itself, but the ultimate purpose was to pursue. Therefore, the ability to play geomungo well was not technique but personality.
Geomungo was the musical instrument that was produced with reference Chin (琴) of China during the Goguryeo period. However, through united Silla, Goryeo and Joseon period, it became to be naturalized as the most Korean musical instrument, and it became as one of the most important traditional Korean musical instrument until now.
Geomungo was the musical instrument that focused on the ideological aspect rather than aesthetic or artistic aspects of music. It was designed and produced in that way in the acoustics. The most essential idea at the geomungo is the thought of Confucianism. That is, it could be the fulfillment of virtuous music (德音) through reserved music (遺音). Geomungo was applied through the musical form of court music [正樂, upright and elegant music]. Therefore, geomungo is slowly played in the way to strum or pluck strings, has lower register and has less graceful notes in melodies. In modern times, the music of geomungo was accepted widely to civilian class, and then geomungo sanjo music was born. Sanjo is the music that reflects Korean traditional shamanism actively. This sanjo is the music that pursue the purification of sophisticated mind through musical elegy[哀]. Therefore, the plaintive(sad) gyemyeonjo melody becomes the center of sanjo music. In addition, geomungo has the characteristics of thought of Taoism (道家) that pursues rare music.
Today, Western music is the mainstream in our music field. However, Western music has focused on techniques and skills to a fault since the baroque era. Therefore, it became the music for musical techniques not the music for men, and as results of that, modern classical music in the West has drifted farther and farther apart from the sentiment of people. In these situations, Western composers turn their gaze on the Oriental thoughts and Oriental traditional music. However, Korean people still do not get out of the Oriental musical thought that westernization of music is the advancement of music. So the meaning of geomungo is really significant in this situation. One of the important clue to settle many problems that Korean musical field has in present could be found in the thought and music of geomungo. This study suggests the way to solve these problems by means of musical that is the true way of Musical Logos of geomungo.
