초록

고개는 산지 지형, 교통로, 경계 지점, 군사 요충지 등 인문·자연지리적 특성이 중첩되었기에 조선시대 지리지 편찬 과정에서 편목의 구성과 서술 방식이 계속 변천되었다. 세종실록｢지리지｣(15C)는 험조처와 요해처에 고개가 편재되고 약 30곳을 기록했다. 관방으로서의 고개 기능이 강조되었다. 동국여지승람(16C)은 산천조에 고개가 편재되고 약 440곳이 기록되었다. 군현간 교통로로서 경계에 위치한 고개 설명이 강화된다. 여지도서(18C)는산천조 또는 관애조에 고개가 편재되며 약 650곳을 기록했다. 脈과 관련한 풍수지리적 설명이 강조된다. 이후 김정호가 편찬한 동여도지와 여도비지에서는 교통로와 관련된 역도, 보발, 기발, 영로, 진도, 교량 등을 道里조 이하로 묶었다. 대동지지(19C)는 다시 도리 편목을 해체하고, 고개는 산수조 이하에 嶺路조에 편재되며 2,257곳을 기록했다. 김정호는 교통로 관점에서 영로조의 고개 서술 방식을 위치, 이명, 군현 경계, 도로 연결 및 방향, 도로등급, 지형, 인문 시설, 비고 등으로 정비하였다. 고개는 지역과 지역을 연결하는 교통로이자, 방어해야 하는 군사 요충지이다. 상충하는 두 가지 목적을 지리지에 담기 위한 편찬자들의 고민을 편목 구성과 고개 서술 내용에서 읽을 수 있다.

영어초록

The mountain pass encompasses a variety of human and natural geographic features, such as mountainous terrain, transportation routes, boundary points, and military strategic locations. As a result, the composition and narrative style of the sections related to mountain passes evolved throughout the process of compiling geographical texts in the Joseon Dynasty. In the SejongSillok Jiriji (15th century), mountain passes were categorized under steep and hazardous locations(險阻處) and strategic points(要害處), with around 30 passes recorded, emphasizing their role in defense. The DonggukYeojiSeungnam (16th century) recorded about 440 passes, categorized under the section on mountains and rivers(山川條), with a focus on passes located at boundaries between administrative districts and their function as transportation routes. In the Yeojidoseo (18th century), approximately 650 passes were recorded, categorized under either the section on mountains and rivers or critical passes(關隘條), with a focus on mountain ranges (脈) and Pungsu(風水). Later, in Dongyeodoji and Yeodobiji, compiled by Kim Jeong-ho, mountain passes related to transportation were grouped under sections of routes(道里) such as roads, bridges, and other transportation-related features. In the Daedongjiji (19th century), the section on rotues was dismantled, and mountain passes were categorized under the mountain pass section(嶺路條) with 2,257 passes recorded. Kim Jeong-ho systematized descriptions by detailing locations, alternate names, administrative boundaries, transit points, destinations, road classifications, terrain, human-made facilities, and additional notes. The mountain pass serves as both a transportation route connecting regions and a key military defense point. The challenges faced by the compilers in representing these two conflicting purposes can be seen in the structure of the sections and the descriptions of the mountain passes in these geographical texts.
