5･18 민중항쟁과 1980년대 광주･전남 개신교계의 동향 (A Study on 5･18 Civil Resistance and the Movements of Protestant Communities in Gwangju and Jeonnam in the 1980s)

초록

이 논문은 1980년 5･18 직후부터 제5공화국기(1981~87) 광주･전남 개신교계의 5･18 관련 동향에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
1980년 5･18 직후 대중집회와 단체활동이 금지되었지만 초교파적으로 구성된 광주시기독교비상구호대책위원회는 11월까지 수습 및 구호 활동을 계속했다. 그리고 기장･예장통합･기감 등 교단에서도 피해상황 조사 및 부상자 위문 등의 활동을 벌였다.
1981년 제5공화국의 성립 이후 1984년까지 광주･전남의 개신교계는 구속자 석방과 희생자 보상, 책임자 처벌과 진상규명 및 명예회복 등 5･18 관련활동을 전개했다. 그리고 그 중심은 기장 교단 및 광주시기독교연합회･NCC･EYC･YMCA･YWCA 등 진보적 교단･기관들이었다.
1985년 제12대 국회의원 선거에서 야당이 승리하고 신민당을 중심으로 야권이 통합되는 등 정국이 변화되면서 광주･전남 개신교계의 5･18 관련활동도 더욱 활기를 띄었다. 1987년 박종철군 고문치사와 4･13 호헌선언 이후에는 참여하는 교단･기관도 확대되었으며, 개헌투쟁의 열기가 뜨거웠던 같은해 5월에는 광주의 14개 교단 교역자 534명이 초교파적으로 성명을 발표했다.
이처럼 5･18 이후 제5공화국기 광주･전남의 개신교계는 1970년대와 같이 교단의 성격(진보･보수)에 따라 5･18 관련활동에 대해 다른 입장(적극･소극)을 보였으나, 1980년 수습･구호를 위한 활동과 1987년 개헌투쟁을 통한 5･18 관련활동에는 초교파적으로 보조를 같이하기도 했다.

영어초록

This paper traced back the movements of the Protestant communities in Gwangju and Jeonnam Province in relation to 5･18 Civil Resistance right after its occurrence in 1980 and during the Fifth Republic(1981~ 1987). The findings can be summarized as follows:Even though mass rallies and group activities were banned right after the occurrence of 5･18 Civil Resistance in 1980, the Christian Emergency Relief Committee of Gwangju formed among different denominations continues to cope with the situation and do relief activities till November. In addition, the religious associations such as The Presbyterian Church of Korea, The Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea, The Korean Methodist Church also engaged in activities such as investigating the damages and consoling the wounded.
The Protestant communities of Gwangju and Jeonnam Province carried out 5･18-related activities including releasing those in custody, compensating for victims, punishing those who were responsible, investigating the event to find truth, and recovering honor from 1981 when the Fifth Republic was established to 1984. At the center of those activities were progressive religious associations and organizations such as the Religious Association of The Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea, Christian Association of Gwangju, NCC, EYC, YMCA and YWCA.
With changes to the political situations such as the opposition party winning the 12th parliamentary election in 1985 and the opposition groups unifying around the New Democratic Party, the 5･18-related activities of the Protestant communities became even more active in Gwangju and Jeonnam Province. The participating religious associations and organizations expanded in 1987 when Park Jong-cheol was tortured and killed and Protection of the Constitution was declared on April 13. In May of the same year when the zealous fight for the revision of the Constitution was fierce, 534 ministers of 14 religious bodies in Gwangju made a statement beyond difference in denomination.
Although the Protestant communities of Gwangju and Jeonnam Province had different positions(active and passive) for 5･18-related activities according to their nature(progressive and conservative) during the Fifth Republic after 5･18 Civil Resistance, they kept pace with each other in the coping and relief activities in 1980 and 5･18-related activities through fight for the revision of the Constitution in 1987.
