제주도 서귀본향계 본풀이의 자료적 성격과 양상 (Charaters and Aspects of Materials on Lineage of Seogwi Bonhyang Bonpuri)

초록

제주도 서귀본향계 본풀이는 신들의 삼각관계 사랑을 다루는 신화라는 점, 신들의 갈등에 따라 지역민들의 갈등까지 잘 담겨 나타나는 신화라는 점에서 주목을 받았던 신화임에도 채록자료 검토를 비롯한 기본적인 연구조차 거의 이루어지지 못한 자료이다. 이 논문은 지금까지 채록된 자료 전반을 검토하면서 다음 두 가지 문제점을 밝히고자 하는 글이다.
첫째는 1930년대에 채록된 아카마스와 아키바의 자료가 60년대 이후에 채록된 자료와 비교해 여러모로 이질적인 양상을 보인다는 점이다. 바람운의 근본을 제주도 토착신이라고 제시하는 점, 박색의 고산국을 미모의 여신이라고 하는 점, 지산국의 능력 또한 고산국보다 월등히 뛰어난 존재로 묘사하는 점 등 60년대 이후 자료와 비교해 신의 근본이나 성격에 있어 적지 않은 차이를 보이고 있어 특수한 자료 성격을 지닌 각편임을 알 수 있다.
둘째 서귀본향계 본풀이는 서귀리, 동홍리, 서홍리 등 세 마을 신들간의 화합과 갈등을 담은 신화로, 동일한 당신화를 함께 공유하면서도 믿는 지역 신앙민에 따라 다른 각도의 신화가 서술 묘사되고 있다는 점이다. 서귀본향계 본풀이는 바람운과 지산국을 섬기는 서귀․동홍리에서 전승되는 자료와 고산국을 섬기는 서홍리에서 전승되는 자료로 구분할 수 있는데, 동일한 신들이 등장하고 동일한 서사적 내용을 지닌 본풀이를 함께 전승시키고 있으나 신들간의 갈등이 두드러지기에 신앙 지역에 따라 각기 신의 성격 및 능력, 본풀이의 전개 시각은 적지 않은 차이를 보인다. 바람운과 지산국을 섬기는 지역은 동일한 본향당본풀이가 전승될지라도 그들이 모시는 신들의 능력을 높이고 찬양하며, 이들 신 중심으로 본풀이가 전개되어 나간다면 고산국을 섬기는 서홍리의 본향본풀이는 그 반대로 고산국이 주체가 되고 고산국의 뛰어난 능력을 위주로 당본풀이가 전개된다. 곧 동일한 신화를 공유할지라도 신앙민과 신앙권역에 따라 신화 전승의 변이 양상을 파악할 수 있다.

영어초록

Seogwi Bonhyangdang Bonpuri(Shamanistic Myth of Seogwi Bonhyangdang) has been caught eyes of scholars in academia due to its two characteristics; first, it deals with the triangle love affairs of gods, second, it also shows the conflict of local people which depends on the conflict of gods. In spite of these kinds of academic importance the source itself has, it is true that basic research such as analysis on the recorded source hasn’t even been done. In regards to this, this article will look into the two aspects by reviewing the recorded source so far.
Firstly, there are certainly a variety of different aspects in the source recorded by Akamas and Akiba in the 1930s when it is compared and contrast with the source being recorded after 1960s. The three different aspects could be highlighted from the source recorded by Akamas and Akiba as follows; first, it argues that the Baramun was a type of indigenous god dwelling on Jeju Island, in other words, the origin of the Baramun can be traced back to as a local god on Jeju Island, second, it also regards Gosanguk, a homely looking goddess as the goddess of beauty, third, it describes Jisanguk, also another main goddess in the story, as someone more superior than Gosanguk. Those kinds of differences would allow scholars to think of it as a type of version which should be considered as academically and historically valuable source.
Secondly. Seogwi Bonhyangdang Bonpuri dealing with both the harmony and conflict among the three gods from the three villages, Seogwiri, Dongheungri, Seohongri, shows that a certain type of myth can be both narrated and described as the myth with different angles depending on the local people who are the ones share and believe in the myth. The myth can be divided by the two; one is the historical source transmitted in Seogwiri and Dongheungri, in which Baramun and Jisanguk are worshiped by the local people and another is the historical source transmitted in Seohongri in which Gosanguk is worshiped by the local people. It is true that the myth dealing with the same gods and same narrations has been being transmitted. Yet, since the conflicts among gods are fairly noticeable, depending on the local regions, there are differences such as the characteristics and capacity which the gods could perform and the way how the storyline is developed in the Seogwi Bonhyangdang Bonpuri. With respect to the differences, basically, the subject being worshiped by the local people and being more focused in the development of the storyline can be differentiated depending on the regions. In the regions in which people worship Baramun and Jisanguk, even though the same kind of Seogwi Bonhyangdang Bonpuri has been transmitted, there are a certain level of tendency that people praise the capacity which the gods they believe in could perform and the story is being developed by focusing the gods they worship for. In the regions of Seohongri where Gosanguk is worshiped by the local people, Gosanguk becomes the main subject of the story and also the story is being developed by focusing more on the excellent capability Gosanguk has. In other words, even though people share same myth, the myth can be differentiated depending on the local people, the believers, and the regions where the local people dwell on with faith. In this regard, the different aspects and its variations can be academically worth looking into more in details.
