브라질 동아시아계 이민문화지형연구 (Study on Immigration Culture Topography of East Asian Immigrants in Brazil)

초록

본 연구는 브라질에 거주하는 동아시아 이민자들의 문화적응 유형을 베리의 분류법에 따라 동화(Assimiliation), 분리(Separation) 통합(Integration)과 주변화(Maginalization)로 구분하여 그 차이점을 밝히고 문화적응(Acculturation)에 영향을 미치는 요인과 각각의 이민사회의 문화적응 유형 특성을 규명하려는 목적을 가지고 있다.
브라질 동아시아계 이민의 역사적 특성에 기초해 이민문화지형 유형화를 시도하였고, 베리의 문화적응척도를 활용하여 동아시아계 이민자들이 어떤 문화지형을 이루고 있는지 밝혔고, 동시에 이민문화지형을 유형화함으로써 동아시아계 이민자들이 공통적으로 보수적인 통합 과정에 있다는 결론에 도달했다. 일본계의 경우에는 이민 5세대가 등장하면서 사회생활에서는 일본인으로서 보다는 브라질인으로서의 정체감을 더 느끼고 있었다. 가족이나 대인 관계에 있어서는 여전히 일본 커뮤니티 내에서 이루어지고 있는 것이 특징적이었다. 한인과 중국인의 경우는 분리형 사회통합과정을 거치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 상대적으로 한인이 중국인보다는 좀 더 통합 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났으나 그 차이가 크지 않았다.
이와 같이 브라질 동아시아계 이민자들의 문화지형은 대체로 동화, 통합과 분리로 구분할 수 있다. 일본계들은 브라질 사회에 동화형 사회 통합 과정을 거치고 있고, 한국은 분리형에서 통합형으로 변화되어 가는 과정이라고 할 수 있으며, 중국은 분리형의 사회통합과정을 보여주고 있다. 일본계의 사례를 볼 때 한국과 중국 이민문화지형도 시간이 흐름에 따라 동화형 사회 통합 과정으로 진행할 가능성이 매우 높아 보인다.

영어초록

In this study we categorizes the cultural adaptation types of East Asian immigrants residing in Brazil into Assimiliation, Separation, Integration, and Maginalization according to Berry's classification, clarifying the differences, and clarifying the cultural adaptation. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence the culture and the characteristics of the types of cultural adaptation of each immigrant society.
From the perspective of Brazilian East Asian immigration history, there was already a clear difference. China, which has the oldest immigration history, had a relatively small impact compared to its history, as it could not lead to continuous immigration. Chinese immigration is mostly made up of people from southern regions, which can be defined as a trade diaspora operated by the same organization as the Chinese network in Southeast Asia. Japan has maintained its immigration through the policy immigration period for about 110 years of immigration history, and it can be said that there are so many positive reports about Japanese immigration in the media that it landed softly. For a long time, however, the Japanese have gone through a closed process of integration, referring to foreigners in Brazil (Gaijin) and Japanese communities, referring to themselves and other Japanese as foreigners. The Korean descent has the shortest immigration history, but is in the process of integrating into Brazilian society through economic success. Nevertheless, they showed a passive attitude in communicating with the local community. Koreans grew up by forming ethnic group residences centered on Liberdade and Bom Retiro. In fact, it is difficult to assess that only Koreans are special because certain immigrant groups tend to form their own communities in the region or country to which they have immigrated. It can also be said that it is going through a conservative integration process rather than open integration.
In this way, the cultural topography of East Asian immigrants in Brazil can be divided into assimilation, integration and separation. The Japanese are going through a process of assimilation-type social integration into Brazilian society, and Korea is a process of changing from a separate type to an integrated type, and China shows a separate type of social integration process. Looking at the case of Japanese-Brazilians, it seems very likely that the Korean and Chinese immigration cultures will progress as time goes by as social integration process of assimilation.
