잡지『공업계(工業界)』(1909-1910)를 통해 본 한국 산업디자인의 시원 고찰 (A study on the origin of Korean Industrial Design by investigating on the Magazine Gongupge(Industrial World) (1909-1910))

초록

본 연구에서는 대한제국 말기부터 한일합방 초기까지 공업전습소에 입학한 조선인 학생들이 1909년에 결성한 ‘공업연구회’의 활동에 주목하였다. 공업연구회에서는 월1회마다 회보로『공업계』를 간행하였으며 지금까지의 선행연구에서는 3권까지 발간되고 폐간되었다고 알려져 왔으나, 1909년부터 1910년까지 기간 중 국내에 현재 총 5권이 현존하여 소장되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 지금까지의 『공업계』에 대한 국내의 선행연구에서는 모두 공업연구회의 회원명단과 간략한 활동 사항, 그리고 1909년 제1권 1호인 창간호의 필자명과 글의 제목만 정리되어 발표된 상태였다. 본 연구는 국내에 소장된 5권의『공업계』에 실린 조선인 학생들의 글을 면밀하게 검토하여 의생활과 주생활의 근대적 개량과 연관된 산업디자인의 개념적 시원으로 볼 수 있는 내용을 구체적으로 분석한 것이다. 이것은 대한제국 시기의 근대 산업교육과 관련한 역사연구에 있어서 큰 성과라고 본다.『공업계』에서 볼 수 있는 의생활의 근대적 개량과 연관된 산업디자인의 개념적 시원으로는 섬유산업의 시작을 배경으로 탐구된 인공 안료의 사용과 섬유의 염색을 위한 색채과학의 개념에 대한 논의를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 주생활의 근대적 개량과 연관된 산업디자인의 개념적 시원으로는 증재법을 시행하기 위해 공장에 설치하는 목재건조설비의 원리와 작동방법을 소개한 것을 비롯하여 목재의 표면에 광택을 내는 칠색의 작용, 가옥을 건축할 땅의 성질에 따른 과학적인 지반작업, 그리고 건축 재료와 그에 가해지는 힘의 역학을 계산한 건축설계의 개념에서 확인할 수 있었다. 이것은 모두 일광, 공기, 습도에 따라 재료가 변형되고 색채가 퇴색되는 것을 방지하여 내구성 있고 개량된 질의 섬유, 가구, 가옥을 생산하고 생활에 공급하고자 하는 의도를 담고 있는 것이었다. 또한 근대적 산업기술을 발전시켜 국가가 부흥하게 되기를 바라는 관립공업전습소의 공업연구회 조선인 학생들의 열망이 투영된 것이기도 하다.

영어초록

This study focused on the activities of the ‘Industrial Research Association’, which was organized in 1909 by Korean students who entered the national industrial training center from the end of the Korean Empire to the early days of the Japanese colonial period in Korea. The Industrial Research Association published Gongupge(Industrial World) as a newsletter once a month. In previous studies, it was known that up to 3 volumes were published and then discontinued. However, a total of 5 volumes are currently in existence and stored in Korea. The previous domestic research on Gongupge(Industrial World) so far has only researched and published the list of members of the Industrial Research Association, brief details of their activities, and the lists of authors and titles on the first issue, Volume 1 in 1909. This study, for the first time in Korea, closely reviewed the writings of Korean students which were published in the five volumes of Gongupge(Industrial World), and specifically examined what can be seen as the conceptual origins of industrial design related to modern improvements in clothing and residential life. The analysis is considered to be a great achievement in historical research related to modern industrial education during the Korean Empire.
The conceptual origins of industrial design related to the modern improvement of clothing as seen in Gongupge(Industrial World) are based on the beginning of the textile industry and scientific knowledge. This could be confirmed through the use of artificial pigments and the concept of color science for dyeing textiles. The conceptual origins of industrial design related to the modern improvement of residential life as seen in Gongupge(Industrial World) could be confirmed through the principles and operating methods of wood drying equipment installed in factories, the effect of coating on the surface of wood to make them shiny, the concept of architectural design, which surveyed scientific ground work according to the nature of the land on which to build and calculated the dynamics of the forces applied to them. This all contains the intention to improved the quality of the textiles, furniture and houses by preventing from being deformed and colors fading due to sunlight, air, and humidity. It is also a reflection of the aspirations of the Korean students at the Industrial Research Association who hoped to develop modern industrial technology to support the nation wealth and power.
