초록

본 연구의 목적은 1900~10년대 독립운동에 관여한 대구지역 경제인들의 동기와 활동 배경을 밝히는 것이다. 개항을 비롯한 사회변동은 대구지역 경제인들에게 기회와 위기를 모두 가져다주었다. 그러나 경부선 부설 이후, 일본인의 세력 확장이 대구의 기존 상권을 잠식해 나가는 방향으로 이루어지면서 대구의 토착세력과 개항 이후 대구지역에서 특수를 누린 세력 모두에게 위협이 되었다. 이에 대한 한국인 경제인들의 반응은 다양하게 나타났다. 그중에서도 독립운동 참여는 적극적인 대응이다. 당시 일부 경제인들은 상업을 통해 독립운동의 자금을 확보하고 단체 간의 연락을 기도하였다. 이들의 활동은 지역 독립운동의 연속성을 보장함과 동시에 지역 독립운동세력과 다른 독립운동세력을 연결하는 교점을 마련한 것이라 평가할 수 있다.
당시 주요 인물의 행보를 살펴볼 때, 1900~10년대 대구지역 경제인들이 각자의 이익과 신념에 따라 얽혀있었음을 확인할 수 있다. 이들의 입체적인 행보는 친일과 반일의 명확한 구분이나 경제인들의 친일 활동을 단순히 독립운동의 좌절에 따른 타협의 산물이라 이해하는 견해에 의문을 제기한다. 당시 대구지역 경제인들의 활동은 국권 회복 활동과 일본인 실업가와의 협업 등으로 나타났는데, 이는 지역에서의 상업 활동 유지 및 주도권 확보라는 현실적인 동기 때문이었다. 이들의 사례를 지속적으로 발굴하는 것은 지역사회에서 독립운동에 관여한 인물의 위상을 ‘오피니언 리더’로서 이해할 계기를 제공해 줄 뿐만 아니라, 독립운동사에 ‘드러나지 않은’ 부분을 드러낼 수 있는 실마리를 마련할 수 있다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 추가적인 사례 발굴이 이루어진다면 인물들의 관계 역시 입체적으로 복원할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the motives and activities of homo economicus(economic man) in Daegu who were involved in the independence movement in the 1900-1910s. Social changes, including the opening of a port, brought both opportunities and crises to economic man in Daegu. However, after the establishment of the Gyeongbu Line, the expansion of the Japanese power took place in the direction of encroaching on Daegu's existing commercial districts, posing a threat to both the indigenous forces of Daegu and those who enjoyed benefits in Daegu after the opening of the port. There were various reactions from Korean economic man to this. Among them, participation in the independence movement is an active response. At that time, economic man secured funding sources for the independence movement through commerce and attempted to communicate between organizations. Their activities can be evaluated as ensuring the continuity of the local independence movement and at the same time establishing a point of connection between local independence movement forces and other independence movement forces.
Next, when looking at the actions of major figures at the time, it can be seen that economic man in Daegu in the 1900-1910s were intertwined according to their own interests and beliefs. Their three-dimensional moves raise questions about the existing views that understand the clear distinction between pro-Japanese and anti-Japanese, or the pro-Japanese activities of economic man as simply a product of compromise due to the frustration of the independence movement. At that time, the activities of economic man in Daegu appeared as the restoration of national sovereignty and cooperation with Japanese businessman, which was due to the realistic motive of maintaining local commercial activities and securing leadership. Finding their cases is meaningful in that it not only provides an opportunity to understand the status of people involved in the independence movement in the community as “opinion leaders,” but also provides a clue to reveal “unrevealed” parts in the history of the independence movement. If additional cases are discovered, it will be possible to reconstruct their relationships in three dimensions.
