초기 중국불교사에서『法華經』 연구와법화신앙의 형태 (On the Studies of the Lotus Sutra and the Related Forms of Faith In the Early History of Chinese Buddhism)

초록

본 논문은 초기 중국불교에서 법화경이 차지하는 위치를 자리매김하기 위한 작업의 한 방법으로, 고승전을 중심으로 법화경 연구 상황과 법화경에 나오는 보살을 중심으로 한 신앙형태를 살펴본 연구이다.
초기 중국불교학자들에게 佛性과 관련되어 언급되는 佛知見은  묘법연화경에서만 나오는 용어이며, 이후 주석가들이 활용한 것도구마라집의 묘법연화경이다. 또한 고승전, 출삼장기집을 볼 때一乘說을 담고 있는 勝鬘經, 涅槃經, 十地經 등이 한역되어 있었지만, 후대에 一乘思想을 대표하는 경전으로 법화경을 언급하게되는 점으로 볼 때, 사상적인 면에서 법화경의 유행은 큰 반향을낳았음을 알 수 있다.
한편 초기 중국불교에서 신앙의 대상이 되었던 미륵보살, 보현보살, 관세음보살은 모두 법화경에서 그 역할과 관련성이 두드러지게 묘사되었다. 고승전에서 승려들에게 신앙되었던 형태는, 同名의보살들이 등장하는 다른 단행본 경전에서는 설명되지 않는 내용도있다는 것도 확인하였다. 따라서 구마라집의 묘법법화경은 중국불교사에서 초기부터 사상을 넘어 신앙적인 측면에도 꾸준한 영향을주었다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article purports to investigate the trend of the studies of the Lotus Sutra and the related forms of faith around Bodhisattvas within the sutra in the early history of Chinese Buddhism, mainly on the basis of the Gaosengchuan (高僧傳), as a way to situate the role of the Lotus Sutra in that period. The result might be summarized as follows.
First, In consideration of the importance of the relation with the permanent staying of the Buddha nature in the judgment and classification of the characteristics of the Buddhist doctrines, the Miafalianhuajing (妙法蓮華經) by Kumārajīva should be considered as more important than the Zhengfahuajing (正法華經) by Dharmarakṣa. For the phrase “fuzhijian” (佛知見), which is mentioned in relation with Buddha nature by the early Chinese Buddhist Scholars, appears only in the Miafalianhuajing in addition to the fact that this version is mainly used by the subsequent commentators. Although the Srimala Devi Sutra (勝鬘經), the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sutra (涅槃經), and the Daśabhūmika Sutra (十地經) were also translated as the sutras containing the doctrine of Ekayāna, from the fact that the Lotus Sutra is mentioned as the representative scripture of the Ekayāna thought in later times, the circulation of the Lotus Sutra is ascertained as having caused a great reverberation in the doctrinal dimension.
Second, the Bodhisattvas of Maitreya, Samantabhadra, and Avalolitesvara, who were worshipped as the objects of faith in the early Chinese Buddhism, are all depicted conspicuously as to their role and relevance in the Lotus Sutra. The monks’ form of faith in the Gaosengchuan is ascertained to have not been explained in other separate sutras containing the appearance of Bodhisattvas. Therefore, the Lotus Sutra is ascertained to have consistently influenced on the aspects of faith as well as of doctrine since the early period of Chinese Buddhism.
