경기지역 청동기시대 취락의 경관기획과 점유기간 (The Landscape Planning and Occupation Length of Settlements during the Bronze Age in the Gyeonggi Region)

초록

본 연구는 주거의 구조와 시설, 취락의 점유기간 등 제 양상을 통해 취락 경관의 변화를 살펴보는데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 점유기간을 파악할 수 있는 주거 내부 시설에 주목하여 이를 주거의 사용수명으로 환산한 뒤 취락 점유기간의 시·공간적 전개 과정을 살펴보았다. 또한 생계경제적 차원으로 접근하여 점유 방식의 변화와 원인을 입증하고자 하였다.
중기에 농경이 발달하고 저장 식량의 중요성이 증가하면서 주민집단은 생산량 증가와 안정화에 유리한전략을 사용했을 것으로 추정된다. 따라서 취락의 입지를 용수 획득과 복합 생산 활동에 유리한 대형 하천주변으로 선정하여 취락을 기획 조성했다. 또한 농지 및 저수지와 관개시설 등 생산 설비의 관리를 위해 장기점유가 가능하도록 주거 구조 등 시설물에 많은 비용과 에너지를 투자했던 것으로 보인다.
그러나 후기가 되면 농경 기반의 생계경제가 약화된 것으로 추정된다. 이는 중기 단계에 인구 밀집화에 의한 산림의 황폐와 가경지 감소로 인한 식량자원의 고갈로 이어진 것으로 보인다. 이 같은 생계경제 자원의 불안정성을 해소하기 위해 농경 및 수렵·채집, 어로를 병행하는 혼합경제 체제로 전환되면서 중기 이전과는 다른 형태의 생계 전략을 영위하였을 가능성이 있다.
생계경제 전략 변화에 따른 점유기간의 시·공간적 변화 양상을 검토한 결과 경기 북부, 중부지역은 중기 단계까지 점유기간이 점차 증가하다가 후기에 대폭 감소한다. 점유기간이 증가하면서 취락의 경관은 주거군이 밀집하고, 배치와 주거 시설이 정형화되는 것으로 확인된다. 또한 외부 저장 수혈과 분묘군이 축조된다.
그러나 후기에 점유기간이 대폭 감소하면서 개별 주거가 분산되고, 주거 시설과 배치에서 정형성이 약화되며외부 수혈이 사라진다. 경기 남부지역도 북부, 중부와 동일한 변화가 확인되지만 상대적으로 점유기간이 길었던 것으로 보인다. 취락 경관의 변화를 살펴보면 주거군이 점차 밀집하고 주거 시설과 배치에서 정형성이 강화되며, 외부 수혈이 증가하고 환호와 분묘군이 축조된다. 그러나 후기에 들어 점유기간이 소폭 감소하면서주거지들이 분산되고 수혈이 감소하지만, 소형·방형 주거지는 상대적으로 정연하게 배치되는 양상이 확인된다. 이를 종합하면, 경기지역의 취락 경관은 생계경제 전략 변화와 밀접한 관련성을 갖는 것으로 생각된다. 경기지역 취락은 생계경제 전략에 유리한 환경을 조성하기 위해 입지를 선정하고, 경관을 기획하여 예상 점유기간에 적합한 주거 시설을 마련했던 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

The purpose of the present study is to examine changes in settlement landscapes through a variety aspects including the structure and facilities of dwellings and the occupation length of settlements. To this end, the study examined the spatio temporal development process of settlement occupation lengths by focusing on the inner facilities of dwellings, identifiable by occupation length, and converting this into the use-life of the dwelling. Furthermore, the study attempted to verify changes in occupation styles and the causes behind them by taking an approach from a subsistence-economic level.
As agriculture advanced and the importance of food storage increased in the Middle Bronze Age, residential groups are presumed to have used a strategy more advantageous for increasing and stabilizing production. Therefore, they planned and constructed settlements by selecting, for their settlement locations, areas surrounding large rivers advantageous for obtaining water and mixed production activities. They also seemed to have invested much cost and energy into facilities such as dwelling structures to enable long-term occupation with the purpose of managing production facilities such as farmland, reservoirs, and irrigation facilities.
However, in the Late Bronze Age, it seems like the agriculture-based subsistence economy was weakened. This seems to have led to the depletion of food resources as a result of devastated forests and the decrease of arable land due to population concentration in the middle stages. It is likely that the people pursued a form of subsistence strategy different from the Middle Bronze Age, as a transition was made to a mixed-economic system which concurrently implemented agriculture, hunting gathering, and fishing in order to resolve the instability of subsistence-economic resources.
Upon examining spatio-temporal changes regarding occupation length depending on changes in subsistence-economic strategy, the study found a gradual increase in occupation length up to the Middle Bronze Age for the the northern and central Gyeonggi areas and then a huge decrease in the Late Bronze Age. With the increase in occupation length, the study confirmed, in terms of settlement landscape, increased concentration for dwelling clusters and the standardization of layout and residential facilities. Moreover, pits and tombs were also constructed. However, as occupation length largely decreased in the Late Bronze Age, and as individual dwellings dispersed and the regularity of residential facilities and layout weakened, pits disappeared. The southern Gyeonggi area exhibits the same changes as the northern and central areas but with a relatively longer occupation length. A look into changes in settlement landscape reveals a gradual increase in concentration for dwelling clusters and stronger regularity for residential facilities and layout, along with an increase in pits and "the construction of tombs and ditched enclosures. However, with a slight decrease in occupation length in the Late Bronze Age, dwellings became scattered, and the number of pits decreased, but small and square-shaped dwellings were found arranged in a relatively well-organized fashion. In summary, the settlement landscape of the Gyeonggi region is thought to be closely related to changes in subsistence economic strategy. It seems like residential groups selected locations for settlements in the Gyeonggi region with the purpose of constructing an environment advantageous in terms of subsistence-economic strategy and subsequently planned landscapes in the interest of setting up residential facilities that fit their expected occupation length.
