新羅 王京 출토 銘文土器의 생산과 유통 (Production & Circulation of ‘Earthenware with letters’ found from the Shilla Capital)

초록

이 글은 신라 왕경의 생산지인 花谷里 토기생산유적과 소비지인 왕궁(月城, 月池),사원, 交叉路, 건물지 등 왕경유적의 토기명문을 유기적으로 연결하여 분석함으로써 신라 통일기 토기의 생산과 유통을 검토하였다. 이 과정에서 단순히 문자만을 분석한 것이 아니라 명문토기가 출토된 고고학적인 환경인 생산 및 소비유적을 고려하면서 遺蹟의 성격, 土器, 文字 등을 종합적으로 연결하여 분석하는 방법론을 사용하였다.
화곡리 생산유적에서 출토된 토기명문을 분석하여 토기의 종류, 문자 기입방법(刻書, 押印), 記入 위치 등의 외형적 조건뿐만 아니라 문자의 내용도 해명하였다. 이를 기초로 왕경 소비지에서 출토된 명문토기도 같은 방법으로 분석하였다. 이에 따라 생산지와 소비지 유적에서 출토된 토기의 명문은 ①工人이나 검수자(官司･官人), ②용기의 명칭과 용량, ③祭儀 및 方向 표시, ④보관시설(창고, 대형토기) 등으로 구분할 수 있다.
신라 통일기에 토기와 기와의 생산을 담당하였던 官司는 瓦器典이며, 토기나 기와는 모두 瓦로 통칭되었다. 토기생산유적에서 생산된 토기 중에는 工人이나 주문한 검수자인 官司(官人)의 명칭이 보이는 경우가 있다. 관사나 인물의 명칭이 모두 기입되는 경우도 있으나 필요에 따라 한 글자만 기입하는 예도 있다. 생산된 토기는 창고에 보관되었으며, 용기의 종류(瓮, 瓷, 甁, 缶)나 용량(十石, 一斗)을 기입하여 창고에 수납하였다. 근거리에 위치한 토기가마에서 생산된 토기는 왕경의 소비지로 공급되어 생활용기로 활용되었던 것이다.
이와 같이 화곡리 생산유적과 왕경의 소비지에서 출토된 명문토기는 생산과 유통을 연결하여 이해할 수 있는 자료로서 중요한 의미를 가지며, 생산지와 소비지 간의 관계를 해명할 수 있는 자료이기도 하다.

영어초록

Examined in this article are the inscriptions found upon the serface of earthenware excavated from both the earthenware production facility at Hwa’gok-ri/花谷里 which was a production center nearby the Shilla capital, and other sites as well, where these earthenware are believed to have been used, such as the royal palace(Weol-seong/月城, Weol-ji/月池), Buddhist temples, intersections and structural vestiges located inside the late capital city. Through such examination, the production and circulationof ‘Earthenware with letters(“lettered earthenware”)’ in the Unified Shilla period are analyzed here. Not only the letters but also the conditions of the vestiges (of either production facilities or consumption sites) were accounted for, in order to appropriately analyze the nature of the found artifacts, which would have undoubtedly been defined by circumstantial elements as well.
Examination of inscriptions, found upon the earthenware excavated from the Hwa’gok-ri vestige, revealed the ‘types’ of the earthenware, the fashion of inscription(carving[刻書], sealing[押印]), the position of inscriptions, and the contents of those inscriptions. Similar information were also drawn from the inscriptions found upon earthenware excavated from sites where they were presumably consumed. Information from the inscriptions can be categorized as follows: ① Identity of the technician or inspector(governmental official) ② Name and capacity of the artifact ③Ceremony in which the artifact was used ④ Facility where the artifact was preserved.
In the Unified Shilla period, the governmental office which was in charge of producing earthenware and roof tiles was the “Wagi-jeon” office. Earthenware and rooftiles were all called as “Wa/瓦.” Found among the earthenware produced from the earthenware production vestige are some Wa artifacts that show the name of the technician(Gong’in/工人) or the name of the office (or official) which (or who) ordered the production and later inspected the outcome. Sometimes the name of both the officeand a person were all inscribed upon the surface, but sometimes only one letter wasdone so. All the produced earthenware were put in custody of the warehouses, and the type of utensil (such as Ong/瓮, Ja/瓷, Byeong/甁, Bu/缶) or the capacity(“10Seok/石units,” “1 Du/斗unit,” etc.) were recorded when they were submitted.
