화엄경』 「여래현상품」의 분석 (Analysis of Avatasakasūtra Yeoraehyeonsangpum)

초록

이 글은 『화엄경』「여래현상품」을 분석해 본 논문이다. 『화엄경』의 광대함은 법계와 우주를 통섭하고 그 심오함의 진리는 공간으로는 법계에 다하고 시간적으로는 三世에 통한다. 세존은 마가다국 보리수 아래에서 정각을 이루신 직후 삼매에 들어 침묵한 채로 시방세계에 광명을 놓으신다. 이 正覺의 자리에 보현보살을 비롯한 여러 시방의 대중들이 구름처럼 모여 佛의 깨달음을 찬탄하고, 正覺 직후의 佛과 佛에 의해 드러나는 광명세계의 실상을 밝히고 있는 데, 그 품이 바로 「여래현상품」이다. 여기서 나타나는 광명은 얼굴의 치아 사이 광명으로 타방의 대중을 집회한 것과 미간 백호상의 광명으로 果를 보여 因을 성취한 것, 그리고 도래한 모든 보살의 털구멍에서 방광한 것으로 총 3번이다. 이 품에서 나타나고 있는 여래의 광명은 몸에서 발하는 신광과 지혜의 광명인 智光으로 구성되어 있다. 佛이 직접 몸으로 보여주는 신광은 2가지 종류가 있는데, 하나는 항상 빛을 발하는 常光과 또 하나는 몸의 특정 부위에서 빛을 발하는 방광이 있다. 따라서 여래현상의 모습에서 핵심은 身光과 智光[心光]으로써 상수인 일체법승음보살을 위시한 시방세계의 바다에서 운집한 시방보살이 불의 위신력으로 법주가 되어 다양한 세계 해와 국토 등을 佛 세계를 장엄하는 공양구인 구름 비유를 사용하여 불 세계의 모습을 생생히 묘사하고 있다는 것이다. 「여래현상품」에서 광명은 알지 못했던 세계를 자각하게 하는 역할과 그 자각을 통해 신심을 일으키고, 그 빛을 닿는 자는 고통에서 벗어나게 하고, 설법하기 전에 광명을 비춰 대중을 모으는 역할도 한다는 점에서 중요하다.

영어초록

This paper has examined and analyzed Avatasakasūtra Yeoraehyeonsangpum. The vastness of the Avatasakasūtra governs the realm of Buddhism and the universe and the truth of its profundity reaches the realm of Buddhism in space and passes through the past, present, and future in time. Sejon brings bright illumination to countless worlds in the ten quarters while in silence entering sammae immediately upon true awakening under the bodhi tree of Magada. The great assembly from ten directions, including Bohyeonbosal gather together like clouds in this place of true awakening to admire the enlightenment of Buddha, revealing the true image of Buddha and the world of light disclosed by Buddha, which is known as Yeoraehyeonsangpum. The light here appears a total of three times: the light emitted between teeth of face assembling the public of the west, light emitted from the thin white urna or curl between the eyebrows of Buddha to achieve the cause by showing result and the light emitted from pores of all Bodhisattvas who have arrived. The light of Yeorae consists of the bright illumination issuing from the body of Buddh and the light of wisdom. There are two types of bright illumination issuing from the body of Buddh: constant light that is illuminated all the time and the light emitted from certain parts of the body.
Therefore, the key aspect of Yeoraehyeonsang is that Bodhisattvas assembled from countless worlds in the ten quarter with the one quintessence Seungeum Bodhisattva as a representative, which is a chief as the light of body and the light of wisdom become an expounder of Buddha's teaching with the awesome and mysterious spiritual power of Buddha and vividly depicts the world of Buddha using the cloud metaphor, which is an offering vessel that is used to illustrate the world of Buddha with various elements, including sun and land. The light at Yeoraehyeonsangpum is important in that that it plays a role in raising awareness of the unknown world, bringing about devotion and faith through such role and awareness, and having those who touch the light escape from pain, and gathering the assemble before preaching by shedding the light.
