仁祖代 ‘塞門洞王氣’說 생성의 정치사적 의미 - 慶德宮의 역사적 연원에 대한 고찰 - (The Emergence of a rumor regarding an Energy worthy of a King emanating from Saemun-dong (塞門洞王氣) during King Injo/仁祖’s reign, and its political meaning - Examination of the historical origin of the Gy)

Examined in this article is a ‘rumor(or a theory)’ regarding an energy,’ worthy of a King, supposedly emanating from the Saemun-dong/塞門洞 area [塞門洞王氣]. This rumor was presented as the reason for constructing the Gyeongdeok-gung/慶德宮 palace, during King Injo’s reign. The contents of this rumor, how it was generated, and what was the historical source for that rumor, are all examined here, in order to determine the political meaning of the rumor itself.
The story of this rumor, is that the Saemun-dong area had been the old residence of a royal family member named Jeong’weon-gun/定遠君, and hearing that the place was surrounded by an energy worthy of a king, King Gwang’hae-gun/光海君 took the place himself and built a palace there. But this rumor is not based upon facts of the Gwang’haegun’s reign. It is only a presentation of how the Gwang’hae-gun’s days were perceived by the people of King Injo/仁祖’s days when the Gwang’hae-gun Journals(“Gwang’hae-gun Ilgi”) was compiled. At the time, Honorary king Weonjong/元宗 was being commemorated, so the political connection between Jeong’weon-gun’s mother Madame Inbin/仁嬪 and Gwang’hae-gun had to be denounced. Also needed was a policy different from that of Gwang’hae-gun, who honored and commemorated his own birth mother.
The ‘New Palace’(新宮) at Saemun-dong was Jungjong/中宗’s old residence constructed during King Yeonsan-gun/燕山君’s days, where Jungjong lived before he became the next king. After he was enthroned, the house went to Jungjong’s oldest son Bokseong-gun/福城君, and then to King Seonjo/宣祖 before he was enthroned. After Seonjo was enthroned, the residence went to Shinseong-gun/信城君, and then to Neungchang-gun/陵昌君.
But when Neungchang-gun was named as the successor to Shinseong-gun, he was only 8, so the house was placed under the management of Neungchang-gun’s birth father Jeong’weon-gun. That was why this place came to be perceived as had been owned by Jeong’weon-gun. After a political purge that involved Neungchang-gun, the place was included to become part of the Gyeongdeok-gung palace. Neungchang-gun was considered to have been a connection between Jungjong and Seonjo, who both were enthroned after living in a civilian residence, and because of that fact he was a perfect candidate to become part of the ‘king-worthy energy-emanating’ rumor that would justify Weonjong/元宗’s enthronement.
