한국 불교시문학에 나타난 ‘아유일권경’ 게송의 계보와 ‘상방대광명’의 불교생태학적 의의 (Genealogy of the Gatha ‘I Have One Sutra[我有一券經]’ in Korean Buddhist Poetry and the Buddhist Ecological Significance of ‘Always Shining Bright[常放大光明]’)

초록

이 글은 ‘아유일권경’ 게송의 창작자를 밝히고 그것이 어떻게 후대로 이어져 나갔는지를 추적하는 연구다. 이 게송은 서산대사가 지은 불교헌공의례집인 『운수단』(1588) 안에 들어 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 죽은 이들을 위한 기도 의식 때 음송되던 시라고 할 수 있다. ‘아유일권경’ 게송은 240년 뒤 백파긍선의 『작법귀감』(1826) 속에 다시 등장한다. 이 책 역시 『운수단』과 마찬가지로 불교의례용 저술이다.
이 게송이 일반대중 독자들에게 본격적으로 소개된 것은 한용운의 『정선강의채근담』(1917)을 통해서라고 본다. 한용운은 홍자성의 『채근담』을 해설하는 과정에 이 게송을 인용함으로써 세계인을 위한 보편적 잠언집 안에 불교의 게송을 결합시킨다. 이 게송이 특정 종교만의 진리가 아니라 여러 종교와 사상을 아우르는 보편적 진리라는 점을 강조하고자 한 것이다.
퇴옹성철은 한용운이 인용한 이 시를 보고 호기심을 크게 내어 출가하게 되고, 시인 조지훈은 선불교 공부하는 과정에 이 시를 귀중한 자산으로 간직하고 활용한다. 그리하여 약 4백 년 간에 이르는 게송 전승의 계보가 만들어진다. 청허휴정-백파긍선-용운봉완-퇴옹성철-지훈동탁의 줄기다. 선맥이나 법맥의 전승이 아닌 게송을 통한 한국 선불교정신의 전승을 확인한 점에서 의의가 있다.
또한 이 게송 중의 ‘상방대광명’이 불교생태학적으로 어떤 의미가 있는지에 대해서도 주목했다. ‘상방대광명’은 한역 경전의 관습적 표현인 ‘본래면목’, 즉 깨달은 상태의 표현이라고 보았다. 한 걸음 더 나아가, 차크라 이론과 『티벳 사자의 서』에 나오는 죽은 이들을 위한 기도문, 붓다의 초기경전인 『니까야』 등을 조사하여 ‘상방대광명’이 붓다의 성도 순간의 에너지 현상임을 밝히고자 했다. 그리하여 이 게송의 성격을 ‘모든 생명체가 본래 붓다’라는 불교의 진리를 나타내는 것으로 보았다.

영어초록

This article is a study to uncover the creator of the verse of ‘I have one sutra[我有一券經]' and to trace how it has been passed down to the next generation. It has been confirmed that this gatha is contained in “Unsudan[雲水壇]”(1588), a collection of Buddhist dedication ceremonies written by Master Seosan. Therefore, this gatha can be said to be a poem sung during prayer ceremonies for the dead. This gatha reappears 240 years later in Baek-pa Geung-seon’s “The Paragon of Rules on Conduct[作法龜鑑]” (1826). This book is also written for Buddhist dedication ceremonies, like “Unsudan”.
This gatha was introduced to the general public in earnest through Han Yong-un's “The Careful Selection on Chaegeundam with Lecture[精選講義 菜根譚]”(1917). By quoting this gatha in the process of expounding Hong Ja-seong's “Chaegeundam”, Han Yong-un incorporates a Buddhist gatha into a universal collection of proverbs for people around the world. He wanted to emphasize that this gatha is a universal truth that encompasses many religions and ideologies, not just the truth of a particular religion.
Toe-ong Seong-cheol saw this poem quoted by Han Yong-un and became curious and became a Buddhist monk, and poet Cho Ji-hoon kept and used this poem as a valuable asset in the course of studying Zen Buddhism. Thus, a genealogy of gatha traditions spanning about 400 years is created. The genealogy of Cheongheo Hyujeong – Baekpa Geungseon – Yongun Bongwan – Toeong Seongcheol – Jihoon Dongtak. This is significant in that it confirms the transmission of the Korean Zen Buddhism orthodoxy through gatha, not the transmission of Zen or Buddhist doctrine
In addition, this paper paid attention to the meaning of ‘Always shining bright[常放大光明]’ in this gatha from a Buddhist ecological perspective. ‘Always shining bright’ was viewed as the expression of ‘original aspect’, that is, the state of enlightenment, which is the customary expression of the Chinese-translated scriptures. Going one step further, this paper examines the theory of chakras, prayers for the dead in “the Tibetan Book of the Dead”, and “Nikaya”, the earliest sutras of the Buddha. Through this, this paper intends to reveal that the ‘Always shining bright’ is the energy phenomenon of the moment of enlightenment of the Buddha. Therefore, this paper considered the character of this gatha as representing the Buddhist truth that ‘all living things are originally Buddhas’.
